BEIJING (AFP) – China on Saturday unveiled what it billed as the fastest rail link in the world -- a train connecting the modern cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan at an average speed of 350 kilometres (217 miles) an hour.
The super-high-speed train reduces the 1,069 kilometre journey to a three hour ride and cuts the previous journey time by more than seven and a half hours, the official Xinhua news agency said.
Work on the project began in 2005 as part of plans to expand a high-speed network aimed at eventually linking Guangzhou, a business hub in southern China near Hong Kong, with the capital Beijing, Xinhua added.
"The train can go 394.2 kilometres per hour, it's the fastest train in operation in the world," Zhang Shuguang, head of the transport bureau at the railways ministry, told Xinhua.
Test runs for the service began earlier in December and the link officially went into service when the first scheduled train left the eastern metropolis of Wuhan on Saturday.
By comparison, the average for high-speed trains in Japan was 243 kilometres per hour while in France it was 277 kilometres per hour, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link, according to Xinhua.
Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometres to 120,000 kilometres, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States.
China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 -- a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.
In September, officials said they planned to build 42 high-speed lines by 2012 in a massive system overhaul as part of efforts to spur economic growth amid the global downturn.
The network uses technology developed in co-operation with foreign firms such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom.

...are we forever gonna blame Nyerere and his catastrophic grand ideas, or are we at one point going to draw a line and call to task incumbent leaders to manage and modernise one or two of the few colonial infrastructural remnants that we dearly still rely on?! now that we are evidencing a 1000km high speed rail being built in 5 years or less...

Sijui kama Singida ni km 700. Hii treni nafikiria kama ingekuwa bongo nadhani ni masaa 3-3.5 Dar-Mwanza.

Kuna matatizo ya kimuundo wa kufanya miradi hasa inayotekelezwa na serikali. Wenyewe wanaita mchakato wa kupata mkandarasi/mshauri/au mzabuni/mbia na lugha nyingine kama hizo. Hii michakato inapata nguvu zake kutoka serikalini baada ya serikali kuridhia matakwa ya wafadhili hasa World Bank na IMF. Ndio maana miradi yote inayotolewa fedha zake kutoka WB lazima serikali i-implement mfumo uliokubaliwa na WB & co, regardless funds hizo ni mkopo au grant. Ndipo hapo tunasingizia tunajitawala lakini kiukweli ni kuwa sisi ni watumwa na tunaandaa mazingira zaidi ya kitumwa hata kwa vizazi vijavyo.

Nadhani wakati sasa wa serikali kutumia udikteta kwenye mambo nyeti kama hii miradi mikubwa. Vitengo vya ujenzi pale JKT na JWTZ ilikuwa ni mahali muhimu kabisa kwa kusimamia walau 40% ya miradi yote ya serikali na kuitekeleza kwa ufanisi, iwapo tungeacha umimi na kuamua kuwa huru kifikra. Utakuta kutokana hii michakato kuwa mirefu, isiyo na tija na kuhusisha mikono mingi ya watu wasio na ufahamu hususan wanasiasa, matokeo yake ni kujengwa kwa miundombinu hafifu ambayo inachukua muda mrefu kukamilika, and sarakasi, ins -outs back and forth nyingi zisizo na kichwa wala miguu.

Sasa hiyu organisation structure ya kusimamia hiyo kwa ufanisi imekwenda wapi (maana, treni ilikuwa haiondoki Dodoma kabala basi la kutoka iringa na Arusha hayajafika, na yalikuwa hayachelewi ovyo ovyo pamoja na barabara kuwa za vumbi) Leo hii hakuna mawasiliano kati ya Jiji wajenga barabara na DAwasco wajimba barabara kuweka mabomba.
