Apple.comiTunes is a free app. And as well you can sync stuffs to your device without needing ana account.But if you are up to buying apps or songs for device, then you definitely have to own an a/c.Hope that works for you.Goodluck!
 
YES it possible to get free itunes application without an apple account for an ipod...itunes ni freeware.
