CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye
The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has said it is looking into the possibility of joining forces with the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and lobby for hosting the African Nations Cup (AFCON) tournament in Tanzania.
CECAFA Secretary General, Nicolas Musonye, said on Saturday that there is greater possibility for the tournament to take place in the country because there is strong passion for soccer among the sport's domestic fans. He said Tanzanian soccer fans can convince the continental soccer governing body, to give their country the opportunity given that the fans are great soccer lovers.
Musonye said in contrast to other countries in the East African region, Tanzanian soccer fans are more than spectators in that they have become sponsors because of their zealous support to their teams, as well as visiting sides in the Kagame Castle Cup tournament. He said the fans have been cheering both home sides and visitors, adding that the final, which will bring together domestic soccer rivals Simba and Yanga, will spice up the tournament.
"I have learnt a lot of things in this year's tournament particularly in fanaticism and the way the country's government has participated in the organization of the event," said Musonye.
Musonye also said the Kagame Castle Cup has not been taking place in other countries outside Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda because it has always been easy to organize the event in any of the four countries. Meanwhile, the CECAFA boss strongly denied claims that the body has unfairly lobbied for Simba and Yanga's qualification to the final.
He said the two teams have huge fan base in the country and have not been favoured as they qualified through penalty shoot outs. TFF Secretary General, Angetile Osiah, said the fans that are suspicious of Simba and Yanga's success in the tournament should present valid evidences.
