Tanzania plans to open a High Commission in Australia within the next two years, in a move aimed at enhancing existing good co-operation between the two countries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Mr Bernard Membe, said in Dar es Salaam on Friday that Australia and Tanzania have for long been having good and friendly relations, despite the distance between them.

"It is always very difficult to find a good friend thousands of kilometres away. This is, however, not the case with Australia," Mr Membe said at a ceremony to open Australian Consulate in Tanzania. During the ceremony, Mr Thierry Murcia, who was recently named as Australia's first Honorary Consul toTanzania, who is to be based in Dar es Salaam, with jurisdiction throughout Tanzania was introduced.

Mr Membe said Australia has been supporting Tanzania in the field of health, especially in programmes aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality. He said many Tanzanians have benefitted from scholarships. In 2011, some 32 Tanzanians studied in Australia under this programme, up from 25 in the previous year.

The minister said Tanzanians should utilize fully the opportunity of having a consulate in
Dar es Salaam. "They should open their eyes and explore business opportunities in that country," he said. The function was also attended by a special envoy of the Australian Prime Minister to Tanzania, Mr Bob McMullan.

Mr McMullan said that: "On Friday represents a key moment in the bilateral relationship between Australia and Tanzania. The opening of the Consulate firmly cements the strong friendship between these two wonderful countries." "I am sure that Mr Murcia and the Consulate will add even greater depth and understanding to the relationship," he said.
