Tanzania exported more manufactured products to other East African Common (EAC) member states than it imported between January and June this year, outgoing Minister for East African Cooperation Dr Deodorus Kamala (pictured) said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.[IMG]
The minister said the good performance of the country’s products in the market is a result of positive effects of EAC Customs Union that came into effect in January 2005.
During the six-month period Tanzania exported products to other EAC members worth Sh214.8 billion while imported products were worth Sh178.48billion, Dr Kamala said.
The basic element of a common market is a smoothly functioning Customs Union including complete elimination of all tariff and non-tariff barriers plus a common external tariff. In the common market there is free movement of goods, labour, services and capital.
“People doubted whether the country could perform well in the EAC, fearing products from the rest of the community members would flood the local market. The contrary is true. People should not be scared because Tanzania is doing well,” said Dr. Kamala.
He cited processed or concentrate juice and beer as products that are doing well. “Other products which have boosted Tanzania in that market are salt industries, all sisal products, and all timbers products.
Dr Kamala is chairman of EAC community ministers. He said they rejected to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) following a meeting held in Tanzania in June this year because the agreement is unlikely to benefit EAC members.
