A new opposition political party, Movement for Democracy and Economic Change, is in the offing. After expiry of its provisional registration in July, last year, it has now applied for full registration, according to its Chairman, Mr Wilbrod Senya.

He said the new party was inaugurated last year and that until on Tuesday some 2,209 members from Tanzania Mainland and the Isles have joined the party, whose motto is "For Charity and Co-operation We Will Build Democracy and Stable Economy in Tanzania." According to Mr Senya, verification of members in ten regions will be conducted between February and March, this year.

He mentioned the regions, with the number of members in brackets, as Kilimanjaro (281),
Arusha (204), Manyara (209), Dodoma (212), Morogoro (217), Iringa (224), Mbeya (216), Dar es Salaam (223), Wete Pemba (216) and Zanzibar urban (207). He said the party's logo is a giraffe standing in the middle of the map of Tanzania and a spice tree located in the Indian Ocean along the coast of Tanga and Dar es Salaam.

He named James Assey and Rehema Ismail, in the provisional leadership, as the party's chairpersons while Jerome Nindi and Mohamed Hassan are acting secretary general and deputy secretary general respectively. Ms Donista Massawe, Mr Waziri Ramadhan and Emmanuel David Shayo were picked as the party's Bursar, Publicity Secretary and Youth Chairman, respectively.
