The government plans to purchase a modern ship with a capacity to carry 320 passengers and 180 tonnes of cargo for Lake Nyasa at the cost of USD 9 million.
Deputy Minister for Transport Athumani Mfutakamba said in parliament yesterday that a feasibility study was completed in September this year. He said the plans also include the building of a new ship between 2013 and 2015.

"We have submitted the feasibility study report to the government of Denmark for funding," he noted.

According to him, the feasibility study was conducted by the government in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency (Danida). He said there were also efforts being made by the government, through the
Tanzania Ports Authority, to improve infrastructures at Lake Nyasa ports.

He said the improvement included construction of a new passenger and cargo dock in December, this year, and repairing of the passenger lounge at Kiwira port, whose maintainance work would be completed this fiscal year.

He said that Mbambay Bay port would also be expanded in the 2011/2012 financial year, while construction of a warehouse for Kiwira port was expected to begin in the coming financial year.

He however said that, in collaboration with
Tanzania Ports Authority, the government would use its Ports Master Plan to construct new infrastructure at Manda, Liuli and Ndumbi ports in the 2012/2013 fiscal year. He said the aim was to create an environment that would enable provision of services for available vessels and the new ones.

Mfutakamba was responding to a question from Ludewa MP Deo Filikunjombe (CCM), who queried delayed implementation of the president's promise to purchase a new ship for Lake Nyasa with a capacity of carrying 400 tonnes.

The legislator also wanted to know whether there were any plans to expand available infrastructure to allow smooth operations for the new ships.
