TANZANIA has increased the number of scholarship opportunities for China from five to 10 every year.
This was done so as many Chinese students to study in the country, beginning from 2012/2013 academic year, the Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Mr Philip Mulugo, said.
Chinese students pursue in Tanzanian universities courses such as social sciences and Kiswahili language. "We are pleased to have had a student from China who has studied postgraduate programme in Kiswahili and has graduated with a Masters in Kiswahili language," said the Deputy Minister.
The minister made the remarks during the opening ceremony of a two-day China Education Exhibition 2012 at Nkrumah Hall of the University of Dar es Salaam on Tuesday organized by Chinese Higher Education department.
Mr Mulugo said implementation of the Cultural Agreement between Tanzania and China had contributed a lot to economic development of Tanzania through training of its personnel at all levels of higher education.
The Chinese government offers Tanzania about 100 scholarships annually in the fields of Health, Education, Agriculture, Business Management, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences and Financial Management.
Head of the exhibition delegation Cao Shihai said China had 290,000 international students studying in its various universities in 2011 which reflected quality of higher education in China.
"We believe that studying abroad could not only benefit the students themselves, broaden their views but also could improve the international students exchange among countries and enhance mutual understanding between them," he noted.
He said student exchange and cross-border education could also improve the teaching quality, promote university's academic subjects and field construction and improve measures of administration.
The China Education Exhibition hosted by China Scholarship Council aims at showing the general picture of Chinese higher education and involves representatives from 20 Chinese universities specializing in science and technology as well as teachers' training.
