The Tanzanian government has expressed deep concern over reports that a vehicle belonging to its embassy in Bujumbura, Burundi was attacked by a grenade, the local media reported on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Monday night, which left the vehicle extensively damaged, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Tuesday.

There was no one in the vehicle during the deplorable incident, it added.

Meanwhile, some officials and witnesses said two people were wounded in the grenade attacks overnight across Burundi, just hours after polls closed in the country's presidential election on Monday, the report said.

For his part, Burundi's police spokesman Pierre Channel Ntarabaganyi said that two other attacks occurred around the country overnight, wounding two members of the same family.

Prosper Ntahorwamiye, spokesman for the National Electoral Commission in Burundi, said a fifth grenade attack targeted one of their vehicles, which was not damaged.

On Monday, the second direct presidential election was held in Burundi since its independence from Belgium in July, 1962.

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza is running for re- election as a candidate of the ruling party CNDD-FDD, while opposition parties boycotted the elections over alleged irregularities during the recent grassroots poll.
