The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) yesterday showed journalists parts of a gas propelled power generating system, worth USD 120 million, it imported from Sweden in a bid to curb energy crisis in the country.
Tanesco Communications manager Badra Masoud informed the journalists that the parts of the entire system once fully installed would generate 100 megawatts of power, but said that the parts received yesterday had the installed capacity of 34 megawatts only.
Masoud said the system had been purchased from a Swedish company known as, Siemens and would be fixed at Ubungo Power Plant by Jacobsen Elektro Company also from Sweden.
She said Jacobsen had entered into a one year contract with Tanesco to assemble the system by June next year.
Masoud said the remaining two consignments would arrive any time.
Jacobsen Elektro project manager Richard French said the other consignments would arrive in the country tomorrow.
We expect to complete installation works by December this year. Upon completion, the 100 megawatts will be fed into the national grid to help curb shortages, which currently stood at 200 megawatts, he said.
