A Kenyan firm plans to produce 300 MW of electricity by 2012 by harnessing renewable wind power in the north of the country, its director told Reuters.

Turkana Wind Power has been studying the viability of wind power projects in the barren, inhospitable region for the last four years, Chris Staubo said.

"Full production will be in June 2012 but we should start production in June 2011," he told Reuters late on Thursday.

Once completed, the project could meet about a quarter of Kenya's total energy demand, which stands at some 1,200 MW, just slightly below the installed capacity.

The government is looking at developing "green" energy sources, such as wind and geothermal, to meet demand that is growing at around 8 percent a year.

Staubo said the total project cost would be about $760 million and that the African Development Bank (AfDB) had indicated it would finance 30 percent of that.

He said the company planned 30 percent equity and 70 percent debt for the project.

The rest of the financing would come from locally syndicated bank loans and international investment banks in South Africa, the Middle East and possibly the United States.

The company plans to put up 360 wind turbines that will each generate 850 kw, to be constructed by Denmark's Vestas Wind Systems A/S. Each turbine that is set up will come online immediately, Staubo said.

The company plans to have a 426 km (265 mile) transmission line linking the site in Loiyangalani to Suswa in southwestern Kenya. From there, it will be fed into the national grid.

The Constant Gardner, the 2005 film based on John le Carre's novel of the same title, was partly shot in remote Loiyangalani.

The 400 kv double circuit line will have the capacity to transmit 1,000 MW but the national grid can currently accommodate only 400 MW more

French company to erect wind-turbine plant in Ethiopia
Reporter, Ethiopia

Company signs 210mln euro wind-turbine project with EEPCo

Hayal Alemayehu

Vergnet Group, the lonely wind-turbine manufacturer in France, has plans under way to erect a wind-turbine factory in Ethiopia, company president Marc Vergnet told The Reporter.
The company’s plan to establish a subsidiary in Ethiopia came on the heels of a 210 million euro wind-turbine project contract it struck with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo), according to the chairman.
The contract, which involves the erection of 120 units of wind-turbines with a total installed capacity of 120 MW, was signed between Vergnet Groupe and EEPCO on Thursday at the Sheraton Addis.
“In most of the countries where we install wind turbines we establish a subsidiary.
We may have more of such project in other parts of the country and we will have interesting wind power projects in Yemen in a few years’ time,” Vergnet said. “The subsidiary we plan to establish here in Ethiopia will help us better execute these projects because it is very difficult to transport wind-turbine blades with over 30 meters length and other accessories from areas afar.”
The company will train and employ Ethiopians in the company’s future subsidiary plant in Ethiopia, according to Vergnet.
The project has an implementation schedule 36 months from the date of commencement to bring the whole wind energy converter units into commercial operation, according to Miheret Debebe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EEPCo.
The first phase yielding 30MW capacity will be commissioned in 16 months after the commencement of the contract, the CEO said at the signing ceremony where the French minister of state for external trade, Anne Marrie Idrac, and her four deputies, were in attendance.
The wind farm project will be financed in an arrangement involving the France development agency (ADF) and one of the largest French banks, BNP Paribas.
EEPCo plans for more of such projects in other parts of the country.
“Nazareth and Azezo (Gondar) wind projects are the next candidates if we overcome the constraints,” Miheret said. “Feasibility studies of other sites are also in progress.”
The Ashegoda wind power project will be one of the six power generation projects currently under construction with an overall budget size of 45 billion birr or about 3.1 billion euros, according to the CEO.
Five hydro-power projects are currently in the making, including Gilgel Gibe two (420 MW) and Gilgel Gibe three (1800 MW), Tekeze (300MW), Tana Belese (460MW) and Fincha Amerti Neshi (100MW).
Three of the hydropower plants will be commissioned before 2009, according to Alemayehu Tegenu, the minister of Mines and Energy, who was also in attendance at the signing ceremony of the wind power project.
The current installed power capacity in the country is about 800MW, while actual production is about 700MW.

Gambia: Wind Power in Action, Bato-Kunku Way

Pateh Baldeh
24 February 2009
The German Association for Rural Electrification in The Gambia (Dorfelektrik in Gambian E.v), founded and led by the German Engineer Peter Weissferdt and his wife Gitta-bothe Citizens of the village of Batokunku in Kombo South is aimed at supplying water and electricity to the village.
This philanthropic idea was carried to produce electricity with a wind converter. According to Mr. Peter Weissferdt, the village is the first pilot project of the association in The Gambia.

The project he said started in 1999 with instalment of an under ground cable network with more than (6) six kilometres of cable and house installations with energy saving lamps (550 pc) sockets and fuses for more than 50 compounds while a water piping system was laid into the ground. All trenching works and cable laying was carried out by the villagers.
According to Peter, in December 2005 a 33/0,4 KV transformer substation to the capacity of 200KVA was contacted to the NAWEC 33KV over head line passing Batokunku was installed with the help of the association. The following year he said a 150 KVA wind converter with a total height of 41 meters and wing spanning 27m in diameter were shipped to the village. He further said the basic idea was to produce green electricity with the wind converter, supply its energy more or less free of charge to the people of the village, and said the surplus energy the transformer station to NAWEC's consumers in the surrounding villages.
Further talking to this reporter at his home in Batokunku Mr. Peter Weissferdt said in May 2008 a power purchase agreement (PPA) between the community of Batokunku and NAWEC was signed. The PPA forms the basis on how the selling and buying of electric power between the two parties as a non profit pilot project for green energy in the Gambia is conducted.
In addition to this he said the village had to apply for a license to produce and supply electric energy publicly. He said when the Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) received their application for a license to distribute electrocution at Batokunku in 2007 PURA immediately dispatched its engineers on a fact finding mission to the village to gather all the necessary information to process the application. Once this was done Mr. Weissferdt said the application was evaluated by PURA and eventually granted by the Department of State for Energy. The license he said was handed over to the village community on 3rd August 2008 as a final and key milestone to ensure that the project formally and officially took off.
The next step he told this reporter was the erecting of this wind converter which took place between December 2008 and January 2009. The testing and since that date he confirmed that the wind converter has been working continuously producing more than 7000 KWh (Kilowatt hours).
As such since August 2008 more than half of the village he said has had continuous 24 hours power. This he went on to say has enabled the local community and people with very low income to have electricity 24 hours a day. The basic nature of the project is a non profit one; he explained that it works on the basis that after deducting the running costs, any profit generated places an obligation on the community to either reinvest it into the network to connect new citizens or into other social village projects. He also revealed that under his leadership the association has since now invested as a philanthropic gift more than four and a half million (4.5 million) Dalasis for cables, house installation, the transformer, the wind converter and its final erection costs including the concrete foundation.
The village community he said had founded a sub institution called Batokunku wind power which is headed by an electric committee elected amongst the villagers and is now technically and commercially responsible for the village owned electricity production and distribution with its own net-work for about 1000 consumers. The German Engineer said this is a great and sustainable way of social responsibility and is also clear example of self help project that has immediate medium and long term benefits in supplying electricity and water, not only for Batokunku but the nation as a whole. This he said is because the project allows for community development that allows the community to earn money for other social village projects. This is the first of its kind in the Gambia concluded Mr. Peter.
This reporter interviewed both the village Alkalo Alh. Fafa Jatta and the village development committee chairman Mr. Faburama Ceesay who all confirmed the wind power in the village and took this reporter to the site. Mr. Ceesay said almost the whole village is now benefiting from electricity at fewer amounts, saying that for every kilo watt they are paying only D1.00 which he said has helped the people of the village especially the poor. He said for water it is meant free for the whole village.
However he told this reporter that above 100 kilo watts for every consumer, one has to pay D6.00 and as he put it, it is for consumers who used more materials in their rooms for business purposes.
The Batokunku VDC chairman admitted that any amount gained from the project will go back to the village social development project and already they have opened an account; that for those who consume more electricity, they pay directly to this account. He also put it to this reporter that the village is now experiencing 24 hours electricity and water supply through the wind power.
For his part the Alkalo Alh. Fafa Jatta appealed for more support through materials to extend the electricity to those who are yet to benefit from it. He said his wish is for every household to benefit from the project. Alkalo Jatta revealed that every time he calls for work, the whole village turns up therefore all should have equal benefit as well. The Alkalo finally thanked and expressed his appreciation to PURA's interesting and challenging role as a regulator. "We therefore welcome the intervention and promotion of alternative energy through this successful sustainable and cost effective community based project", said the Alkalo. He finally said he hopes that more of such projects can be encouraged to evolve through regulatory interventions such as PURA and by communities working in partnership with the private and public sectors.

Hamna kipya!!

Jumapili njema!!!

Well since you are the most bright person, why don't you come up with your solutions?

I can bet you that with my Ungwini I have more knowledge of wind power more than enough engineers that you defend in TZ!

It is something that is called exposure that counts not the classroom workshop one attended!

Huna jipya ila kelele nyingi. As i said to you come up with a constructive idea!

You carry yourself like the most high of knowledge and what you practice or defend is something that has been in practice since the days of Newton and Boyle.

Hivyo kama mimi ninachoandika hapa ni repeat na kinajulikana, mbona weye upasuaji wako ni repeat ya miaka 300 iliyopita? what makes a difference then if not the application?

Kama una lako unataka kusema kwangu say it, but don't come here and make the issue about Ungwini na Mainjinia!

I can careless about the number of any "elite" or average Tanzanians who are outside of the country. We made a choice to live away and I am not goping to use an excuse like yours that Sababu siheshimiwi kwa kuwa mimi injinia au dakitari! What a crapy excuse!

Kishoka this is a good thread

mwishoni mwa mwaka jana nilikuwa na mazungumzo na jamaa wa Vestas lakini they were not interested in medium sized projects kama ya kuproduce MW 10 wao walikuwa wanataka project ya zaidi ya hiyo amount

That said niko katika final stages za mazungumzo na jamaa wa Suzlon lakini mjomba investment capital ya kuweka hizi wind turbine si ndogo...anyway if anything tuwasiliane kwenye PM kwani its an area ambayo nina so much interest nayo

On a flip side hivi unajua nani aliweka zile wind turbines kule Singida? na ni nani alifund that project?

Can someone do that wind power electricity in 180 days and solve the problem we are facing?
