Sex blamed for rise in mouth cancer cases
Published: 16th March 2012
New figures out today revealed more than 6,200 adults were diagnosed with the disease last year. Two thirds of cases were men. In 2001 only 4,000 adults were found to be suffering from mouth cancer.
The condition is often linked to smoking and excessive drinking. But experts have said the dramatic increase is down to a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus) which can be spread during sex. Richard Shaw, a Cancer Research UK expert in head and neck tumours, said patients with HPV-related oral cancers tend to be younger and less likely to smoke.
