FACING A VOLCANO By Ben Mkapa Like an angry lion of the tropical jungle The lava shoots up, A red arrow piercing a canopy of clouds, It threatens the endless stretch of sky. A circling garb of hot air, A circling garb of humans. A red cross on a green jeep, A red cross on a wood shack, A red cross on a white breast. They standby, grim, unshaken, To guard this circling garb of humans. They are all here, Men, women; young and old, Mystified, terrified. They gape it in, their cameras click; Later, removed in space and time, They will vent an endless chime: Is it not wonderful? A boy and a girl, but a few hours met, Their backs to the volcano, they face camera; He wants a souvenir. Is it not wonderful? A beautiful girl, and behind a beautiful monster. A big truck unloads its cargo, Majestic, springy, the cargo swells the circling garb of humans. These are guards, of men against other men. The army, of course! They too missed the red lion. No, no, this is no enemy; juts a glorious sight And the red tongue lashes out. But it wont lick the sky; It wont lick these men there are other tongue What thoughts do they all have? What feelings? As the eruptions bowel of lost time hurls The granitic deluge of suppressed earth which Apace invades forlorn man and crop, and Imposes a reign of barrenness; What thoughts do they all have? What stir them? Fear, awe, Man helpless in contest with nature. He cannot harness this; he cannot explore it. What a fire! It surpasses hell. But the clergyman is not here; He has known a hell fire; he doesnt have to see it. It is better imaged in the cloister, in the pulpit Better described. Nothing real, this heat, and dust, and fire. It makes no souls repent. They work at calculations, Scientists and seismographs. It defies them all, this tongue of fire, this fierce fiasco of rock and Dust; It defies time, this fiery testimony of nature. Ruthless, devastating, defiant, An angry arrow of fire.
