Scholarships Year 2009

The University of Freiburg, one of Germany’s nine Universities of Excellence, invites applications for 10 fully-funded Ph.D. scholarships in linguistics, beginning no earlier than October 1, 2009, and no later than March 1, 2010. Successful applicants will be members of the Research Training Group on “Frequency effects in language” (Graduiertenkolleg GRK 1624/1) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Frequency is assumed to be a possible determinant in usage-based models of language change, language acquisition and language processing. In the Ph.D. projects this determinant will be investigated with a view both to its explanatory potential and its limitations. The envisaged research integrates descriptive-linguistic and cognitivist-psycholinguistic approaches and is empirically based on corpora for standard and non-standard varieties of European languages.

We offer a high-profile research environment, an interdisciplinary teaching programme, a full grant of 13,200 € per annum for a period of up to 3 years, and additional grants covering travel and research expenses.

For more information on the Research Training Group, envisaged Ph.D. projects, and application details, please visit our website: www.hpsl.uni-freiburg.de/grk-frequenz

Calling Applications for Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Peace Building at Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi

Calling Applications for Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Peace Building at Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi

The Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution was launched in 2004, and was one of the first centres for peace and conflict resolution to be established at an Indian university. While the chief focus of the Centre is comparative and contemporary studies, it also aims to fill a gap in Indian academic life - the lack of serious and purposeful analysis of types and sources of conflict in our country & neighborhood, and the methods of dealing with them that India has adopted. There is a wealth of Indian literature on war-making and peace settlements through the ages - but it has not yet been collected or analyzed from a doctrinal point of view.

The Center has, and hopes to develop further, an active programme of: research, curriculum development, teaching, seminars/conferences and training courses for faculty, administration and civil society, as well as partnerships with other university centres/departments and institutions working in the field of peace and conflict studies.

Application deadline is 30th June, herewith I have attached the prospector. Some studentships are available students from SARC countries.

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a three-year doctorate scholarship in petroleum engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology in the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

The title of the project is “*Frontier petroleum geology exploration*” .

*Accretionary prisms are large wedges of sedimentary rocks that have been scrapped off the top of the descending oceanic plate along convergent plate margins. These sedimentary wedges have complex tectonic and infill history and are not well understood because they are located mostly under water with little subaerial exposure. Most geological data is limited to marine seismic. Few commercial hydrocarbons are produced from these tectonic settings, even though they are located in the proximity of large giant oil and gas fields. Therefore these regions are underexplored for hydrocarbons and may hold large quantities of reserves. The aim of the PhD research project is, by compiling and analyzing surface and subsurface data along accretionary prisms worldwide (e.g. Barbados, northern Australian shelf,
Offshore Colombia, among others), to understand the different geologic processes that control their petroleum systems. Some specific geologic problems include: interaction between tectonics and sedimentation, source and reservoir rock distribution, preservation potential of hydrocarbon traps, etc. The project will develop from interpretation into classification schemes dependant on geologic processes that will have an impact on the understanding of the petroleum system and their economic importance for hydrocarbon exploration and production. *

Applicants must have a Master degree in a geosciences related field related to petroleum. Previous experience in seismic and well interpretation using computer software, structural restorations, stratigraphy, and plate tectonics is desirable, but not necessary.

Applicants must have earned a Master of Science/-Technology degree. It is necessary to have obtained an average grade of B or better in order to qualify. The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative. The research fellow must have a good command of both oral and written English.

The selected candidate will be admitted to the PhD program at the University of Stavanger with an agreement to complete the PhD within the duration of the scholarship.

The program will mainly be carried out at the University of Stavanger, apart from a period of study abroad at a recognized and relevant centre of research.

The research fellow is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.515, code 1017, LR 20, ltr 45, of NOK 353 200 per annum.

The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favourable interest rates.

Project description and further information about the position can be obtained from associate Professor Alejandro Escalona, telephone +47 51 83 22 59, e-mail alejandro.escalona@uis.no

Information about appointment procedures can be obtained from Senior Executive Officer Kathrine Molde, telephone +47 51 83 17 44, e-mail kathrine.molde@uis.no

The application must contain the following documents and material and be submitted in three copies:

- A curriculum vita; including educational background and employment history
- The form *Utvidet søkerskjema*
(Information to be made available to the applicants)
- Diplomas and certificates (certified by the educational institution)

Oscar van Leer Fellowship 2009 for Journalists in Mexico, Kenya, India (Orissa), Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Caribbean Region

Call for applications

The Bernard van Leer Foundation is pleased to announce the inaugural Oscar van Leer Fellowship. We invite applications from journalists in qualifying countries (Mexico, Kenya, India (Orissa), Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Caribbean Region) who have an interest in covering children’s issues.

Three fellowships will be awarded, consisting of high-level professional training in skills related to journalism about early chilhood development and children’s rights. A four-week, expenses-paid professional training course in the Netherlands conducted by the Radio Netherlands Training Centre will be provided to the successful candidates.

This is a great opportunity for young journalists to further their general profesional development and to establish for themselves a particular area of expertise.

About the fellowship
The Bernard van Leer Foundation is an international philanthropic foundation based in The Hague that seeks to improve opportunities for disadvantaged young children. It has a long and respected track record of working internationally on early childhood development and children’s rights.

The Oscar van Leer Fellowship commemorates Oscar van Leer, the son of the foundation’s benefactor. The inaugural fellowship also marks the foundation’s 60th anniversary.

One of the difficulties the foundation encounters is that young children’s issues are often poorly understood in media coverage, if they are covered at all. The aim of the Oscar van Leer Fellowship is to contribute to a gradual improvement in the quality and quantity of media coverage of early childhood issues by training up-and-coming journalists, giving them knowledge and understanding that they will be able to apply as they progress in their journalistic careers.

Who should apply?
The fellowship is intended for ambitious young journalists with an interest in children’s issues. We don’t expect you to be an expert in children’s issues already – that’s why we’re offering training. But we want you to be interested in learning more about the issues faced by disadvantaged young children, and the ways in which media coverage can raise awareness and shape opinions of them.

Applicants must be connected to a reputable media outlet, either as an employee or as a frequently published freelance contributor, and must intend to continue to pursue a career in the media. The fellowship is open to journalists in all forms of media, including print, radio, television and web.

Application procedure
You should send us, by no later than 18 August 2009:

  • A completed application form
  • A letter of motivation
  • Your resumé (please include an indication of the reach of the media outlet/s for which you work, in terms of circulation or audience figures)
  • One example of your work, which has something to do with the situation of children in your country. This could be a piece of writing, a short film or radio broadcast. It can be something you have had published already, or it can be something you produce especially for the purpose of accompanying this application. We would like to publish on our website the work submitted by shortlisted candidates, so if the work you submit has been published already, please ensure this would not cause copyright issues.
See the "how to apply" page for details of where to send your application and in what format.

Successful candidates will be announced on 01 October 2009, and will be invited to a presentation in The Hague on 11 November 2009. The training will take place in early 2010.

PhD Research on Anthropological Linguistics Language analysis at Cairns Institute of James Cook University Australia

Level: PhD
Duty: Research
Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics Language analysis
Application Deadline: 31-Aug-2009
Supporting Institution: James Cook University
The Cairns Institute, FASS
LL Issue: 20.1922

Support Description: Applications are invited, from suitably qualified students, to enter the PhD program of the Language and Culture Research Group within the Cairns Institute of James Cook University Australia. Supervision will be provided by Professors Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald and R. M. W. Dixon.

Our PhD candidates undertake extensive fieldwork on a previously undescribed (or scarcely described) language and write a comprehensive grammar of it for their dissertation. They are expected to work on a language which is still actively spoken, and to establish a field situation within a community in which it is the first language. Their first fieldtrip lasts for about nine months. After completing a first draft of the grammar, back in Cairns, they undertake a second fieldtrip of two to three months. Fieldwork methodology centres on the collection, transcription and analysis of texts, together with participant observation, and judicious grammatical elicitation in the language under description (not through the lingua franca of the country). Our main priority areas are the languages of tropical Amazonia and the Papuan and Austronesian languages of New Guinea. However, we do not exclude applicants who have an established interest in languages from other areas.

PhDs in Australian universities generally involve no coursework, just a substantial dissertation. Candidates must thus have had a thorough coursework training before embarking on this PhD program. This should have included courses on morphology, syntax, semantics, and phonology/phonetics, taught from a non-formalist perspective. We place emphasis on work that has a sound empirical basis but also shows a firm theoretical orientation (in terms of general typological theory, known as basic linguistic theory).

The Cairns Institute is a world centre for advanced study relating to the tropics. Professor Alexandra (Sasha) Aikhenvald is Research Leader for People and Societies of the Tropics. Together with Professor R. M. W. Dixon, she heads the Language and Culture Research Group (LCRG), which includes Research Fellows and a growing number of doctoral students. Senior scholars from across the world opt to spend their sabbatical in the Cairns Institute.

The LCRG has strong links with anthropologists and archaeologists, with scholars working on environmental issues, and with the School of Indigenous Australian Studies, all within James Cook University.

The scholarship will be at the standard James Cook University rate, Australian $20,427 pa. Students coming from overseas are liable for a tuition fee; but this may be waived in the case of a student of high merit. A small relocation allowance may be provided on taking up the scholarship. In addition, an appropriate allowance will be made to cover fieldwork expenses. The scholarship is for three years (with the possibility of a six month extension). The deadline for application by international students (starting in 2010) is 31 August 2009; the deadline for students with Australian and New Zealand passports is 31 October 2009. The academic year in Australia commences about 1st March. Successful applicants would take up their PhD scholarships between January and June 2010.

During 2008, FPD continued to support efforts to promote access to education through securing educational grants from sponsors and donors for all potential FPD students. The funding, grants and sponsorships are utilised in the form of a subsidy to enroll potential students, which reduces the role played by costs as a barrier to education.

During 2008, educational grants and sponsorships were awarded to FPD students to the value of R 22 043 279.41 This brings the total monetary value of scholarships awarded since 1998 to R77 027 880.78.

The Univeristy of Amsterdam aims to attract the world's brightest students to its international classrooms. As from September 2007, outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarships (AMS) have specifically been designed by the Universiteit van Amsterdam to offer talented and hard-working non-EU/EEA students the opportunity to pursue a degree in one of the academic fields covered by the UvA. The AMS programme is highly selective: only applicants with excellent study results and motivation may receive a scholarship.
http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlEligibility

Applicants to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for the AMS scholarship. The applicant should:

  • hold non-EEA nationality or nationalities only
  • not be entitled to receive a Dutch study grant or loan ("Studiefinanciering")
  • not be eligible to pay the reduced tuition fee rate for EEA students at the UvA
  • not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship
  • have submitted a complete application to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
  • have been (or will be) admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
  • be enrolled at the time of receipt of the scholarship as a full time student in one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes offered by the GSSS
  • be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable)
  • demonstrate a financial need
Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means that the student is not eligible for an AMS scholarship.
http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlSelection criteria

We have a limited number of scholarships. The best eligible candidates are selected for a scholarship on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field, as evidenced by their academic records, letters of recommendation, written work and/or publications and their proposed research questions;
  • The quality of their letter of motivation.
Equally qualified candidates will be ranked by country of origin* , and extracurricular activities.
* Candidates from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients , from non-EU signatories of the Bologna treaty and from Market and Innovation countries (Russia, Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam) will have preference.
http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlHow to apply?

Applicants wishing to apply for an AMS scholarship should include their application for the scholarship in their application file for the Master's programme of their choice. Your application for the scholarship should contain the following documents:

  • Motivation letter for the scholarship
  • A comprehensive financial plan that shows expected income from all sources and all costs, to provide insight in the additional funds needed from a scholarship in order to finance participation in the Master's programme.
  • A research proposal, detailing your areas of interest and what you wish to research during your time at the GSSS.
http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlWhen to apply?

http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlThe scholarship

The scholarship consists of € 6,000, € 9,000 or € 12,000, but awards are based on the comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due. Scholarship holders will receive their grant in monthly instalments.
http://nukta77.blogspot.com/2009/06/amsterdam-merit-scholarships.htmlConditions

Graça Machel Scholarship Programme Application Information:
The key aim of the Graça Machel Scholarship Programme is to help provide the female human resources necessary for economic, social and cultural development in the southern African region and to develop an educated and skilled workforce that can benefit the wider community. Scholarships that target women have long been recognized as an effective approach in addressing gender equality and eradicating poverty. By providing opportunities to study at postgraduate level, these scholarships aim to empower women and to equip them to take up leadership positions in order to have a direct impact in the communities, nations and region in which they live. Following in the footsteps of Graça Machel, these female scholars will be positive role models for other women.

The Graça Machel Scholarship Programme will provide a minimum of 60 postgraduate scholarships to female students from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe in both South Africa and the UK. The majority of the scholarships will be for study in South Africa.
