Saudi investors eye Tanzanian farmland

I think the issue here is we need to value arable land just the same way the Saudi's value their oil, You cant go today to saudi arabia and "lease out" land and just start drilling for oil unless in a joint venture with the Saudi's and we should do the same to them, force them to have joint ventures with Tanzanian government or individuals to ensure we are jus not letting the last of our resources be locked in for the next century without any real gain to us.

Saudi investors eye Tanzanian farmland

Saudi investors have asked Tanzania if they can lease 500,000 hectares of farmland mainly for rice and wheat farming as part of a plan to secure food supplies for the desert kingdom, officials said.

Senior officials from the Saudi capital's chamber of commerce made the request on the sidelines of a meeting with visiting Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

'Tanzania is ready to do business with you ... There is 100 million acres (40.5 million hectares) of good arable land,' Kikwete told Saudi businessmen.

Samir Ali Kabbani, head of the chamber's agriculture committee, said: 'We had very positive feedback.'

'He (Kikwete) told us that Tanzanian authorities can lease us plots each of which covers up to 10,000 hectares for a 99-year period,' he added.

The Saudi government has joined private operators to invest in farm projects abroad after a long and costly food sufficiency plan threatened to deplete the desert kingdom's water supplies.

Saudi businessmen and officials will visit Tanzania in the next few weeks.

'They can lease the land from the government,' January Makamba, an aide to President Kikwete, said.

"But we have to make sure we don't end up in a situation similar to that of Nigeria: Huge oil reserves but long queues in front of petrol stations,' Makamba said.

Saudi officials are particularly interested in Tanzania because of its geographic proximity, political stability and the availability of water resources and farmland.

Several Saudi firms have already started investing in agricultural projects from Indonesia to Ethiopia.

Indonesia said in August that Saudi BinLadin Group would invest $4.3 billion on 500,000 hectares for rice farming.

Saudi Arabia's annual wheat needs are estimated at about 2.5 million tonnes and it imported a little over 1 million tonnes of rice in 2008, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

I oppose this selling of land with strongest possible terms. This deal is aimed at securing food supply to Saudi Arabia, NOT in reducing food shortage in Tz. Whatever investment put here, will be so done in this spirit and therefore useless to Tz.

Think of the 500,000 hectare as an extension of Saudi Arabia land for 99 years! To understand the seriousness of this deal, ask yourself whether Saudi Arabia would be willing to do a similar deal with Tz, i.e Assit Tz to reduce its oil shortage by leasing her some of the oil deposits for 99years...

a better deal:
Arranged for Tz farmers to be enhanced to produce more food for selling to Saudi Arabia at a good price.

Lastly, I would like for us to bear in mind that we have an obligation protect the land for our future generations, noting that it (the land ) does NOT increase in size but our population does! Our cheap land corrupt eaders who can hardly think beyond election terms can not be relied upon to act responsibly.

Private Saudi firm Planet Food World (PFWC) will invest around $3 billion in agriculture in Turkey over the next five years to export food products to the Gulf region, the head of its Turkish unit said.
PFWC wants to build 20,000 industrial farms over the next five years, Mete Mutluoglu said in an interview.
Each farm is seen at 10,000 square metres and will raise vegetables and fruits as well as having fish, poultry, sheep and cattle-raising facilities. PFWC's total land usage in Turkey is seen at 200 square kms, he said on Friday.
"This may all be increased, if it is possible. Most of the exports will go to Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula ... though we would also like to export to Russia and Europe."
He said turnover from the activities may be in the range of $20 billion in five years for the agricultural goods and could go even higher when additional planned food and animal-processing plants are functioning.
Gulf investors have turned to Turkey's large swaths of arable land as a destination for agriculture investment, seen totalling billions of dollars in the next few years, in order to secure food resources for their populations.
A Gulf investment fund made up of Abu Dhabi Investment House, Gulf Finance House, and Ithmaar Bank in October signed a $6 billion a memorandum of understanding for agriculture investments in Turkey.
Food security is expected to be a major concern over the coming years, and the Group of Eight major industrialised nations have focused on raising billions of dollars for agricultural investments.
Saudi Arabian firms have been looking abroad to grow food for the country and Gulf region. PFWC also has a project in Ethiopia, while others are looking at Tanzania and Sudan.
PFWC, which is registered in the United States, will bring its first five prototype farms on line next week in northwestern Turkey. Mutluoglu said the company would start land acquisition and leasing for the farms in the next four to five months.
Land acquisitions would be made from government agencies that own land, cooperatives, privately-held foundations that have arable land, or from subsistence farmers.
"We made a study and saw that an average one-hectare farm makes about $1,200 a year, that's $100 a month. We could rent their land and they would get a salary," he said.
"If the farmers want to work with us, they would get free housing on the land, a salary, insurance all of which can help bring the younger generation back to their farmlands," he said.
The company also plans to upgrade farms slowly in order to employ alternative farming methods including indoor, vertical soil-less and organic farming, Mutluoglu said.
