Saudi Arabia says it has responded to a "security threat" in neighboring Bahrain by staging a 1,000-troop invasion in an attempt to quell escalating anti-government protests.

“The council of ministers has confirmed that it has answered a request by Bahrain for support,” Riyadh said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

It said that under an agreement of the six-country [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council, "any harm done to the security of a member state is considered a harm done to the security of all members."

A Saudi official said Monday that more than 1,000 troops, part of the Persian Gulf countries' Peninsula Shield Force, had entered Bahrain.

This came as Bahrain's opposition said it considered any foreign military intervention to be an occupation.

“We consider the arrival of any soldier, or military vehicle, into Bahraini territory.... an overt occupation of the kingdom of Bahrain and a conspiracy against the unarmed people of Bahrain,” said an opposition statement.

It called on the international community to act to ensure the “protection of the people of Bahrain from the danger of foreign military intervention.”

Meanwhile, Bahraini protesters are gathering in Pearl Square to protest against the occupation.

The Saudi intervention comes two days after US Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited Manama and held talks with King Hamada bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Gates said he urged the king to undertake rapid and significant reform.

To protect American interests, there is a big American military base in Bahrein. The saudis have been called in as auxillary forces. The American want to show that they are impartial, so the need for an auxillary force, hence the Saudis.

Iran's Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani has warned that regional countries will pay the price for their "US-backed" military intervention in the popular revolutions of the region.

Addressing lawmakers in the open session of the Majlis on Tuesday, Larijani cited US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' recent visit to Bahrain as Washington's green light to the slaughter of Bahraini protesters, saying the visit further exposed double-standard policies of the US and Europe towards developments in the Persian Gulf state.

Larijani's comments came after Saudi Arabia announced that its military deployment in neighboring Bahrain was aimed at quelling escalating anti-government protests at the request of the Bahraini government.

A Saudi official said Monday that more than 1,000 troops, part of the Persian Gulf countries' Peninsula Shield Force, had entered Bahrain.

The top Majlis official said that the deployment of military forces in volatile countries with the aim of suppressing popular revolutions constitutes a real threat to their "glass palaces".

Bahrain's government is continuing its military crackdown against protesters that demand the downfall of decades-old regime of al-Khalifah family.

"It is crystal clear that this aggressive action was carried out with the support of US and in the wake of Gates' trip to the country, and regional nations reserve the right to hold the US accountable for any violence or massacre committed [ in their countries ] to this moment," IRNA quoted Larijani as saying.

The Iranian Majlis speaker further added that the US concern about revolutions in North Africa and Middle East regions fly in the face of their claims and supports for promotion of democracy.

"With the guidance and support of US, some regional countries (mercenaries) obey [Washington's] orders; therefore, these states should prepare themselves for reactions of nations," he further added.

The veteran Iranian politician compared the current massacre of Libyan protesters by embattled ruler Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists to similar intifada in Iraq during which Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein slaughtered thousands of Iraqis after Washington gave him the green light.

Latest reports from crisis-hit Libya indicate that thousands may have been killed or injured in the North African country as fierce government crackdown on the opposition escalates.

So that a new definition of democracy should be tabled. The western has different standards for different regions according to their interest, social. political and economy status of the country,
They are very soft to Chinese gvt, Saud Arabia and Israel where oppossition protesters have been hammered to dealth.
They played a middle men role in Egpyt and Tunisia.
They have been very hasrsh to Libya and Sudan.
Verbal warning to Gagbo.
What do yo think they will do to TZ in case of Upraising? Big Mining coy have thier shareholders based on USA,Canada and UK.
Expect a Kenyan or The Bahrain Type.
In Kenya USA was the only country to send appriciation to Kibaki why?
In Bahrain they have blessed the Saudi to invade the protester in the Bahrain.

Kazi ipo.
