Long-serving Isles Minister for Water, Housing, Energy and Minerals Ali Shamhuna came under fire yesterday when members of the House of Representatives called on him to resign for failure to respect a 2009 House resolution to remove gas and oil issues from the list of Union matters.

The demand was made by six out of eight Representatives who debated an emergency private motion which was moved by Stone Town lawmaker Ismail Jussa during the ongoing session of the House of Representatives in Zanzibar.

Jussa, who is CUF Deputy Secretary General (Zanzibar) said although the union government was yet to reach an agreement with the Isles government on the matter, it had nevertheless decided to send a request to the United Nations for extension of the exclusive economic zone.

He said the Union government, through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development, last week requested for an extension of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) from 200 miles to 350 miles without the go-ahead from the government of Zanzibar.

He further said that on April 8, 2009 the House had received a request from the government to pass a resolution seeking to remove oil and gas issues from the list of union matters, which the House did endorse.

Jussa said he decided to move the motion after he was shocked by Shamhuna's statement that his ministry had cooperated effectively in preparing the write-up which was sent to the UN without informing the Revolutionary Council.

Debating the motion, Kwamtipura Representative Hamza Hassan Juma stressed that the minister should resign for allegedly participating in such a plan without informing the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Kiwani representative Hija Hassan Hija said the minister has done a shameful thing and so it was important for him to step down.

He said since the matter had earlier been discussed by the House of Representatives it was not proper for him to take such a decision without informing the House.

Other representatives who supported the motion were Mkwajuni representative Mbarouk Wadi Mussa and Rashid Seif Suleiman from Ziwani constituency
