Moshi mtu yeyote ambaye haoni kitu unachojaribu kuhoji nadhani ni apologist. You rise a legit question. Maendeleo yanaletwa na sisi wenyewe. Huwezi tegemea serikali ianzishe Mtwara au Msoma daily..ni wananchi wenye uchungu na sehemu zao watakaofanya kitu kama hicho. So is Mtwara, akina Rufiji waliokuwa offended na kauli ya mwalimu Moshi ndo inabidi wafanye something in this direction. Na ukweli unabaki pale pale..bila kuwa na vyanzo vya habari vinavyo reflect mtazamo wa wananchi..Msoma, Kigoma au Mtwara zitabakia hivyo hivo..steriotype hazitaisha.

Kitila, nadhani mwalimu Moshi alikusudia UDSM dailies...kama gazeti la kila siku au linalotoka mara mbili au tatu kwa wiki. Hili lingekuwa exclusively run na wanafunzi wa UD especially wale wa kitivo cha habari. Na habari zinazoandikwa zinakuwa zinatafutwa na wanafunzi wenyewe kwenye kazi zao za kila siku..yaani, ukweli ni kwamba UD is my alma mater, lakini creativity ni zero! Na hili likisimimamiwa na wahariri makini linaweza kuwa gazeti makini sana na likamudu kujiendesha. Wewe umesoma ulaya unajua kabisa wenzetu wana magazeti ya kila siku...na reporters ni wanafunzi... Ila as far as I know mpaka leo UDSM wanafunzi wanasoma magazeti pale utawala kwenye ubao wa matangazo au library..(nakala chache za kugombania).Its a shame.

Thanks a lot for your clarifications, and on behalf of many Mtwarans , who initially were more than offended with your comments, I am glad to inform you that your apology has been accepted. Let me begin by saying that I am not naïve. I understand there is a stigma attached to the word Mtwara and her residents. Sadly, many people who have never been to these two adorable regions (Lindi and Mtwara) have decided to formulate their opinions based on lies and innuendos, which have been shoved down their throats, for decades now, by the few elites in the media.

Let me put it as bluntly as I can: similar to many people in this forum, many Tanzanians don’t have inquisitive minds. We rely much on what has been said, instead of doing our own investigations. Back to the topic, Mtwara and Lindi have a lot of potentials. For quite sometime, these regions were isolated from other parts of the country because of poor roads. As a result, the citizens of these two regions were abandoned by their government and they had to fend for themselves. Despite poor roads, these two regions have average contribution of almost 10% to the National GDP, which are ahead of some well served mainland regions.


Unlike other regions, Mtwara is endowed with a natural deep harbor, but sadly underutilized. The region is also blessed with natural resources like minerals, natural gases, timber,and last but not least, fertile soil. It is worth mentioning that the biggest game reserve in the world known as the Selous is also located in this outcast region. (Meat is not a problem! I hope this be enough to answer your question). Apart from the game reserve, the regions also have a lot of tourist’s attractions like the ancient towns of Kilwa and Mikindani. The domestic demand for the region cash cow crop (cashew nuts) has increased significantly, which in turn led to increase in cashew price. These two regions are also famous for their traditions especially ngoma and Makonde carvings.

Lastly, I firmly believe that these two regions will eventually play a crucial role in revamping our economy. In the meantime,the economies of these two regions are growing at an unprecedented rate; thanks to the road that have just been built. Note to those who are looking for places to invest in Tanzania, the tide is now shifting. I am fervently urging them to consider the southern regions, and they wil not be dissapointed. Trust me on that !

You are a real gentleman. Is is true as I used to hear that there are no cows in Mtwara region? Such a fertile land would help cow herders avoid the problems we hear in Ifakara and Morogoro among farmers and cow herders.

I am humbled by your generosity. I note that Jasusi has taken the liberty to call you a gentleman. What makes him so sure that you are a man? Are you indeed a "he"?

I am one of the many that haven't been to Mtwara. But I swore to myself, some years back, that I would drive there when the Mwara to Mwanza Highway was completed. Has that happened? I will spend two months in Tanzania around Christmas, and I could drive there this time (but only if there is a tarmac road all the way from Dar to Mtwara).

Do you get your meat from the Selous National Park? That used to be against the law! Have things changed that much? Can people who like to eat roast goat meat while sipping their beer (and I belong to that category), do so in Mtwara?

Where could I see pictures of parts of Mtwara? I don't remember ever seeing pictures of that town!

A claim has been made in this thread that Arusha Times is the only regional newspaper in Tanzania. Does that mean that even Zanzibar does not have its own newspapers? That would be unthinkable!

It is the Lutheran Church that started Arusha Times. I am profoundly thankful to them for that worthy effort. Perhaps Tanzanians in the regions will have to rely on their churches not only for education and health but also for news. If that is so, then why would anybody begrudge the churches their right to launch voter education programs? If they have to educate, heal and inform the people (in addition to saving them), why shouldn’t they tell them how to vote for good leaders?

Is Mwanza not more dynamic than Arusha? It has a larger population, and it is a city while Arusha is not. Why does Mwanza not have a regional weekly? Perhaps the Lutheran Church should do in Mwanza what it has so successfully done in Arusha! I am aware that Mwanza has a television station. That is a big plus, but only a few well to do people can be reached that way. Mwanza needs a daily paper, or at least a weekly newsmagazine.

Are we to hear about Mwanza only thorough horror films like Darwin’s Nightmare? When will the cotton growers and fishmongers of Mwanza tell us their own stories in their own newspapers?

Pili, unatakiwa mtaji kuanzisha gazeti ambalo kibiashara utakuwa na hakika watu watalinunua..Magazeti kama Times nchini ni magazeti ya wenye uwezo yasiyokuwa na news zinazowavutia walalahoi..kwa sababu ni machungu kwao kusikia habari za biashara wakati mchoro wa mboga ya kula mchana na ugali ni gazeti tosha kabisa akilini mwa mlalahoi..Hivyo kibiashara ni vigumu sana kumpata mtu akawekeza ktk gazeti ambalo litakuwa ni kazi ya kanisa (msaada)..
nma ndio maana unaona gazeti kama hilo la Arusha limetolewa na kanisa kwa sababu hawategemei faida (fedha) zaidi ya kuwaelemisha wananchi at the same time kueneza neno la Mungu..kazi ambayo haina malipo isipokuwa siku ya siku huko kwa Baguani..
Vyombo vyote vya habari viko controlled na huwezi kuingia njia hiyo kama huna ubavu na naweza kusema huwezi kuingia huko kama wewe sii mwanaCCM unless uingie kwa kupitia Entertainment kama kina Mbowe..
Ni kazi kubwa kuliko unavyofikiria, sii tatizo la elimu mikoani hata kidogo..

Zamani tulikuwa na magazeti mikoani. Kwenye mkoa wangu najua yalikuwepo KUSARE na KOMKYA (maana ya jina la kwanza ni FIKIRIA na la pili ni KUMEKUCHA). Naamini ilikuweko mikoa mingene yenye magazeti yake vile vile. Kitu kilichowezekana zamani wakati hatujafuta ujinga kitakuwa kweli kigumu hivyo sasa?

Kwa vyovyote vile, si vigumu kwa BUTIMBA au St. Augustine University College kuanzisha gazeti la chuo ambalo baada ya muda linajihusisha na eneo lote la Mwanza.

Kama Arusha wanaweza kwanini JIJI la Mwanza lishindwe? Gazeti la Mwanza (on line) lingekuwa kichochea uchumi kikubwa kuliko TV au radio. Siku hizi, watalii wengi Ulaya na Marekani wanaona urahisi wa kupanga safari kwenda Arusha baada ya kusoma Arusha Times on line. Arusha Times (on line) linasomwa sana nje. Linasaidia uchumi wa Tanzania nzima. Kwa nini uzuri wa Mwanza na hata wa Rukwa usiwe accessible on line, kwa kupitia magazeti yao?


Mkandara nashauri uanze Mwanza Weekly (on line). Itabidi uwe na mipango ya kupata habari na picha toka Mwanza, au kuhusu Mwanza, kila wiki. Baada ya miaka miwili au mitatu utalichapisha. Najua unaweza!

Nice to 'see'you on this forum.Am wondering as I read your views where you trying to get more informations about Mtwara as in a curious development perspective (i.e meat, cows, etc)or was your intention/s of mitigating the need for Mtwara to start their newspapers?(from there you jumped to Zanzibar)

If it is the latter than I support you as there is a dire need for regional news on the lines of Arusha Times.

The fibre optic cable will in time play a crucial part following the Govt's Usd 170 million from China to lay some 7,000km of the cable!What remains to be seen is actually how distribution and or its direct benefits trickle out to the Citizens vide the every hungry ISP's(interenet service providers)
