Locally manufactured HIV/AIDS drugs launched, Arusha-based Tanzania Pharmaceutical Industry (TPI) has scored first in East Africa by manufacturing some of the first line drugs used in HIV/AIDS treatment.
The drugs, Stavudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine or a cocktail of the three (TT-VIR), were launched last weekend by Dr. Krisana Kraisintu, a consultant at the plant and TPI Managing Director, Ramadhani Madabida.
Manufacturing of the drugs in Arusha is a relief to the about 1.6 million Tanzanians living with HIV/AIDS. The drugs when distributed for wider use, after approval by the government, will cost between Tsh.15,000 to Tsh.20,000 for a month's dose.
An estimated 50 to 60 per cent of hospital beds in Tanzania are occupied by patients with AIDS- related illness. With training in pharmaceutical chemistry, Dr. Kraisintu was formerly the director of Research and Development Institute of Thailand's Government Pharmaceutical Organization.
Unable to garner the support of his governmental colleagues, he directed his own organization's research funds to develop and produce generic versions of AIDS medications.
Dr. Kraisintu's homegrown pharmaceuticals proved themselves both medically viable and cost effective were later supplied to patients in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Over 100,000 patients are now able to receive treatment in South East Asia.
With partnership with the German Medical Aid Organization, Dr. Kraisintu has now successfully reproduced his formula on to fight HIV-AIDS on a larger scale, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
The President of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, Dr. Joanne V. Creighton has hailed him as the "AIDS Warrior" praising his efforts to provide AIDS treatment to those who would otherwise be denied.
"You have revitalized public health efforts around the world to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS", she noted in a statement of appreciation dated 22nd May, 2005.
My Take:
