THE golf family at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club on Tuesday reeled with grief following the sudden passing on of senior golfer Professor Chris Kamuzora after a tree fell on him.
The Tanzania Golf Union Chairman (TGU) Dioniz Malinzi confirmed the passing away of the veteran golfer and professor of the University of Dar es Salaam. "Yes, Kamuzora is dead," vividly shocked Malinzi and a close companion said.
The deceased Kamuzora met his fate on Tuesday evening at the green number one while in a social golf outing in a team of four golfers.
Eye witnesses confirmed to this paper that the tree was weak for some time before it fell all of a sudden, finding professor Kamuzora on the wrong foot, and bringing him down with a thud.
"There were four players on green number one waiting to swing their swings in the spirit of social golf. All of a sudden a tree nearby came falling with a thud. It was the professor who was caught badly on the head and was trapped under the trunk.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby Agakhan Hospital," said an eye witness. The other players who sustained minor injuries included Gymkhana Club Chairman Professor Mohabe Nyirabu who escaped with a leg injury.
Others are national golfers Michael Makala and Athman Chiudu who are reportedly injured and treated at the Muhimbili Hospital.
While confirming the untimely news, Ilala Regional Police Commander Faustine Shilogile said the police responded swiftly after they were notified by taking the players to the hospital.
Commander Shilongile said: "We arrived at the fateful place and found one person who was critically injured. We rushed him to the Hospital. It is possible he died because he was not in a good shape."
