Zanzibar President, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein

Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein yesterday warned Islamic Revival Forum ‘Uamsho’ against breach of the peace and tranquility, saying the government will use its powers to safeguard people.
He said the government is committed to protecting the people and will not tolerate anyone attempting to disturb the current peace restored after formation of the government of national unity in 2010.
He made the remarks here yesterday when addressing Muslims during Eid el Fitri celebrations. He said in recent days, Isles residents have witnessed frequent incidents that threaten peace, unity and tranquility.
“The government will use its power to ensure peace and protect the people,” he stressed. He said the incidents of May 26th and July 20th this year have damaged not only the government’s image but also affected many Zanzibar residents.
The chaos which was caused by members of the group led to destruction of government property, torching of churches, groceries and bars.
“Such incidents have damaged the image of Zanzibar…Yet we had achieved a unique peace before the incidents,” said the President.
Dr Shein elaborated that it is not easy to regain people’s trust, and the impact on the economy bad.
“These incidents have negative impact on the economy… they affect the country’s development, especially the tourism sector which contributes over 80 percent of our foreign currency”, he said, adding that the government will take legal measures against anyone involved in such unlawful acts.
He said the government of Zanzibar respects the law and will implement its responsibilities accordingly. He said such laws should also be respected by leaders of Non-governmental organisations
He outlined a lot of successes attained by the government of national unity, highlighting peace and tranquility as the major achievement.
On census he called on wananchi to fully participate in the exercise to enable the government to come up with concrete development policy.
He however said that following MV Skagit accident, the government has decided to buy a new vessel able to carry 1,000 passengers and 200 tonnes of cargo. He said the move will help provide Zanzibar residents with reliable marine transport.
Dr Shein said the purchase procedures will be completed in two months, and the new vessel is expected in Zanzibar in the next 15 months.
Meanwhile, Dr Shein has banned public gatherings aimed at discussing union matters, urging Zanzibaris to wait for the Constitutional Review Commission which is entrusted with the task. Dr Shein noted that any attempt by any person to hold meetings on the matter would be against the Constitutional Review Act 2011 which has given such power to the commission.
