Police and CCM have warned other political parties contesting in Arumeru Parliamentary by-election to refrain from causing violence.

The police and CCM warnings come a day after a motorcade of the CCM candidate, Mr Sioi Sumari, was attacked at Maji ya Chai area in Arumeru by people suspected to be followers of CHADEMA. The Head of Election Operations of police, Mr Isaya Mngulu, said that already police had received five cases of violence and chaos during campaign rallies.

According to him, such acts involve tearing of flags of political parties and photos of candidates, theft of a candidate portraits and use of abusive language. He wondered as to why some parties were engaged in unethical and uncivilised actions.

Mr Mngulu said that police would not hesistate to take to task those involved in such acts.
    ArushaRegional Police Commander
Thobias Andengenye said that police would cooperate with political parties to make sure peace prevail. CCM Youth Wing Secretary General Martin Shigela, warned that the party would no longer tolerate such acts of hooliganism by CHADEMA.

In another development, CCM Kilimanjaro Regional Parents Wing (WAZAZI) has condemned abusive language used by political parties against retired top leaders. In its statement, WAZAZI on Monday said that the wing had been saddened by the abusive language used by a certain leader of an opposition party against retired President Benjamin Mkapa during on going by-election campaigns in Arumeru constituency.

"We as parents, are responsible for upbringing these youths to be well mannered in a bid to mould a nation of good ethics and morality. We're therefore obliged to blast them once they violate such ethics," reads the statement signed by its Chairman Thomas Ngawaiya.

He said in the statement that such languages were against tradition, customs and norms of Tanzanians and Africans as a whole and that they were also against the Election Code of Conduct. The Wing termed use of such language as gutter politics which should be ignored while the culprits are taken to task.

Mr Ngawaiya warned that utterance of such offensive statements could trigger disharmony and disasters. He appealed to political parties contesting in Arumeru to desist from making such utterances and appealed to voters in the constituency to elect the CCM candidate to attain desired development.
