Qn: Auncle was visited by numerous guests and he gave the guests numerous seats. When the guests sat in pairs one seat remained and when they sat individually one of them missed a seat. How many were seats and guests?

Let x be guest and y seats
    (i) X=y+1
    (ii) x/2=y-1
subtract the two equation 0.5x=2 hence x=4. Substitute x in equation (i) y=3
