DAR ES SALAAM Dec 19 (Reuters) - Tanzania's energy regulator slashed the price of petrol, diesel and kerosene on Monday, citing a stronger local currency, bringing temporary respite from steep prices that have fuelled inflation.

Rising food and fuel prices pushed the year-on-year inflation rate in east Africa's second biggest economy to 19.2 percent in November from 17.9 percent in October.

The inflation rate for energy rose to 39.2 percent in November from 37.4 percent in October, the highest jump among the basket of goods used to calculate the inflation rate.

The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) cut the price of petrol in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam by 5.41 percent to 1,882 shillings ($1.17), while diesel fell by 4.8 percent to 1,976 shillings.

Kerosene was cut by 4.41 percent to 1,958 shillings a litre.

The adjustments take place with immediate effect and will be in force for the next two weeks until a new price is issued.

"The price changes have been caused by changes in world market prices and an appreciation of the Tanzanian shilling compared to the U.S. dollar -- the currency in which purchases of products in the international oil market are made," EWURA said in a statement.

"The Tanzania shilling compared to the U.S. dollar has appreciated by 4 percent compared to the rate that was in the last publication (of prices two weeks ago)."

Tanzania awarded a $500 million contract in November to a Swiss company, Augusta Energy, to supply 540,000 metric tonnes of oil to the country for the first two months of 2012, under a new bulk procurement system aimed at lowering fuel costs.

The energy regulator introduced a new formula in August for calculating fuel price caps in line with a government pledge in its 2011/12 budget in June to cut prices to tackle the rising cost of living.
