Zanzibar State Minister in the President's Office (Finance, Planning and Economy) Omar Yussuf Mzee has challenged grand corruption suspects to voluntarily leave the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) before they are forced to do so.

Addressing a public rally at the launch of a Kikwajuni constituency water project at Miembeni Jitini grounds in Zanzibar early this week, Mzee said CCM had decided to take off its shell and all those alleged to be involved in grand corruption, including mismanagement of public funds, should leave voluntarily in order to regain people's confidence.

"Those who are not clean should go out on their own; CCM is not a party for the corrupt, it is a party for farmers and workers," he said amid cheers from CCM members.

He noted that it was unfortunate that there were people who had joined the ruling party in order to run suspicious businesses, saying they had to go before they were forced to do so.

He said CCM's main objective in the recent changes was to ensure it became stronger and regained people's confidence to assure victory in 2015.

The statement has come at a time when Zanzibar is facing huge corruption scandals in land matters and government buildings – the scandals alleged to have taken place during the sixth phase government.

Mzee, who is also a member of the CCM Central Committee (CC) said, he was not corrupt and that was why he had been re-elected to the party's CC.

He said the government of national unity (GNU) in Zanzibar was executing its duties by implementing the CCM election manifesto and called on people to turn out in big numbers to implement development projects.

The minister said the GNU had prepared a special strategy to ensure water shortages in Zanzibar became a history.

He also said the form of the GNU did not in anyway weaken CCM, calling on members to work hard to recruit new members in order to fulfil the CCM's goal of taking off its shell.

For his part, MP Hamad Yussuf Masauni said four months after he was elected he had managed to undertake seven major well construction projects to eradicate the water shortage in his constituency.

He said the water projects worth 36m/- would benefit Kisimamajongoo, Kikwajuni Bondeni and Miembeni Jitini residents.

However, he called on the people to continue cooperating with the government in the implementation of the well construction project to free the residents of Kikwajuni Majumba ya Mjerumani, Kikwajuni kwa Maalim Sule,
MichenzaniJumba Namba Saba, Alabama and Kilimani Mashariki from water woes.

Masauni said he had decided to start with the problem of water because many people were spending a lot of time to search for water instead of using the time in production. He thus called on them to volunteer in laying down water pipes during the second phase of the project.
