Newcastle United's Williamson challenges Manchester United's Rooney during their English Premier League soccer match at Old Trafford in Manchester -

Following his conspicuous lack of form and goals in South Africa, Wayne Rooney is back in a Manchester United shirt tonight for the start of the Premier League season. He scored 34 goals in 44 games for United last term and these fans will be hoping for a similar haul over the next nine months

Andy Carroll heads an early chance over the bar when he should at least have hit the target. The big centre-forward had lost his marker through stealth, but then misguided the resulting opportunity

Two seasons ago was one to forget for the faithful Newcastle Utd followers. Aggravation at the club started but thankfully Newcastle were definitely capable of turning things around, and winning the Championship last season brought them right back into the Premier League, and England's highest tier of football. Newcastle ought to survive this year with the assistance of their fans, and can once again create themselves as a powerful force in English football.

TALK OF THE TOON ... Andy Carroll celebrates after scoring his first goal of the afternoon

Newcaslte United 6 Aston Villa 0
IT was just like the good old days at St James' Park.

Goals were flying in, the Toon Army were jumping and a Newcastle No 9 was causing havoc by bagging a brilliant treble.
Legend Alan Shearer was sat high in the stands watching the heroics and he would have loved every second - especially hitman Andy Carroll's powerhouse display.
It was the kind of performance Super Al pulled out of his locker every week.
England Under-21 ace Carroll, watched by Fabio Capello's No 2 Franco Baldini, was playing up front on his own.
But he clinically cashed in against a shell-shocked Villa defence to help himself to his first top-flight treble.
A Kevin Nolan double and a Joey Barton scorcher made it an incredible afternoon on Tyneside.
To bag an edgy first win of the season would have sent the fans home delirious. But to smash SIX against a side aiming to gatecrash the top four was the stuff dreams are made of.
The fact it came against rivals who sent them hurtling through the trapdoor 455 days beforehand made it even sweeter.
It is very early days and there will still be many highs and lows to come as Chris Hughton attempts to keep the Geordies up. But this was amazing stuff - and well deserved too.
From Carroll's brilliant hat-trick to Barton's stellar performance in the middle, Hughton had heroes everywhere.
With Hughton's steady hand on the tiller and no big-money signings blazing into St James' Park, excitement at their Prem return had been replaced with a touch of trepidation. Thing is though, in the mad world of Newcastle United, nothing is ever predictable.
And with just 33 minutes gone yesterday, Tyneside was in dreamland again.
Not even the most hardened Geordie would have contemplated seeing Toon three up before the break.
John Carew's shocking penalty miss on eight minutes was a massive let-off.
Keeper Steve Harper rushed out but pulled down Ashley Young, leaving ref Martin Atkinson with an easy penalty decision.
The big Norwegian gave it such a thump you feared for the fans sat up in row Z as the ball shot towards them. It was just the tonic for Hughton's men because from that moment on, they made Villa look like relegation candidates.
The excellent Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini were superb at the back while Barton began to run the show in midfield.
The Scouser talks a great game but his time at Newcastle has been blighted by injuries and a spell behind bars.
Yesterday though, he finally let his feet do the talking and he brought the house down with a stunning 25-yard opener past Brad Friedel on 12 minutes.
Just after the half hour Jonas Gutierrez fed Jose Enrique on the left touchline and the Spanish full-back, playing out of his skin, delivered a great cross to the back stick.
Carroll nodded down to Nolan and after his first header was saved by Friedel, the ex-Bolton midfielder snapped up the rebound.
Poor old Villa did not know what had hit them. Stylian Petrov and Ashley Young looked lively early on. But as soon as Toon hit their double goal blast, Kevin MacDonald's men were nowhere to be seen.
Villa Park supremo Randy Lerner would not have been impressed and as job applications go, this was a stinker for MacDonald.
On 33 minutes, Williamson headed down a corner and after Richard Dunne botched his clearance, Carroll was on hand to fire in.
Barton was again involved for the fourth, winning possession on the egde of the box before teeing up Carroll to clinically fire home.
Nolan bravely hooked in from inside the six-yard area then Carroll slid in from Xisco's pass to cap a quite incredible afternoon.

Carroll On Cloud Number Nine

By Dan King
Andy Carroll admitted he was delighted with the hat-trick he scored against Aston Villa on the day he wore the famous Newcastle United number nine shirt for the first time at St. James' Park.
Even in his wildest dreams, the Gateshead-born striker could not have imagined completing a treble at the Gallowgate End where he once sat and idolised Alan Shearer, one of several greats to have worn the coveted number.
But, in front of the watching Franco Baldini, Fabio Capello's right-hand man with England, the 21-year-old was Villa's tormentor-in-chief in the 6-0 Toon's victory.
Baldini will surely have noted the aerial prowess that Carroll is quickly becoming renowned for - but also appreciated the fact that all three of the goals came from his left boot.

Pics Special: Barton's Close Shave

When Joey Barton pledged to grow a moustache until Newcastle won their first game of the Barclays Premier League season, some cynics joked that he could end up looking like a member of hirsute rock band ZZ Top.
But instead, it was very much a case of hair today, gone tomorrow as Sunday's 6-0 win over Aston Villa - inspired by a Barton beauty which opened the scoring - saw the facial hair shaved within minutes of the final whistle.
And, razor sharp as ever, club photographer Ian Horrocks was in the St. James' dressing room to capture the ceremonial sacrifice on camera ...

Andy Carrol for England.... He's the new Alan Shearer

Weird week for young Andy Carroll. The big 21 year old Newcastle striker allegedly broke teammate Steven Taylor's jaw just over a week ago (something Taylor is understandably unhappy about) yet somehow this Sunday he's being talked about as a potential England player. OK, it was only in the News of the World, but it's still technically news, but the Sunday red-top is still technically a newspaper. Technically.
Obviously it seems unlikely that Carroll will be going to World Cup 2010, mostly because a) he's playing in the Championship, and b) there are enough dodgy characters in the England dressing room already. Yet Capello and Pearce have been impressed with the big fella's form for Newcaste and for the England Under-21s, so we could be seeing more of him in an England shirt in future. Here's a YouTube vid of the man in action:

If we put the potential character flaws to one side, Carroll might be the sort of big target man England need. Obviously Emile Heskey is doing the job right now, but he's not exactly a popular choice, and he's already 32 years old. I could potentially see Wayne Rooney playing behind Andy Carroll at some point in the next couple of years.
But it's worth remembering that he's only in the Championship right now. If Championship form was a good indicator of international potential, then Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Championship top scorer in 07/08 and 08/09) would be going to the World Cup rather than sitting on the Wolves bench with zero Premier League goals from open play this season. Just saying.
