    Mwaka 1980 katika sherehe za mashujaa kulikuwa na parade kali ya kijeshi mbele ya Raisi Nyerere hapo uwanja wa Taifa huku ikisindikizwa na airshow; hiyo ilikuwa ndiyo sherehe ya kwanza ya mashujaa Tanzania baada ya vita ya Kagera. Kulikuwa na ndege ambazo nadhani zilikuwa tatu za kivita zikiwa zinavinjari anga lile na kuonyesha mbwembwe za angani. Kwa bahati mbaya mojawapo ilipata hitilafu na kuanguka mbele ya macho ya Nyerere karibu sana na kilipo Chuo Kikuu cha Elimu cha Chang'ombe na kumwua rubani wake; ni pembeni kidogo na ulipo uwanja wa Taifa mpya.

    Baada ya ajali ile, Nyerere hakusema mengi katika hotuba aliyokuwa ameandaa badala yake aliwakumbusha wanachi kwa sentensi moja tu, kuwa mashujaa wetu walikumbana matukio mengi ya aina hiyo wakati wa kumwondoa nduli Amini. Kuna wengi waliopoteza maisha yao kama huyu shujaa tuliyeshududia maisha yake yakipotea mbele yetu. Sina kumbukumbu ya maneno kamili yaliyotumiwa na Nyerere kutoa ujumbe huo mfupi.


    Nimekumbuka tukio lile kwa sababu wiki chache zilizopita kulikuwa na taarifa za wapiganaji wetu kuangua na ndege ya kivita huko Handeni na kupoteza maisha yao, na tukio la leo ambapo ndege ya kivita ilianguka huko Kanada na rubani akajirusha angani na kusalimisha maisha yake Ni kawaida kuwa kunapotokea hitilafu kwenye ndege za kivita huwa rubani anaiachia ndege ikajiangukie na yeye mwenye kuruka salama kwa mwavuli. Swali langu je sisi ndege zetu za kivita tulizinunua wapi zisiwe na mechanism ya kuokoa maisha ya rubani namna hiyo?

    Ndege zetu nadhani tulinunua China. Zina eject mechanism lakini yule rubani, kwa mujibu wa wenzake, hakutaka kueject kwa sababu kwa kufanya hivyo ndege ingeanguka kwenye umati wa watazamaji. Alianguka nayo akijitahidi kuielekeza mahali pasipo na watu. Alikuwa shujaa kweli.

    Ni kweli, alikuwa shujaa kwa kitendo kile kama ni kweli.

    Nimeshasahau kabisa jina la rubani yule ingawa lilikuwa populara sana wakati huo kwenye makambi ya jeshi, je unalikumbuka ndugu yangu? Nilikpokuwa Mgulani JKT mwaka 1982, kulikuwa na tetesi za ujenzi wa mnara kwa ajili ya kumbukumbu ya rubani yule, hasa kwa vile inasemekana alijitahidi kuepusha ndege isimwangukie Mwalimu na watazamaji wengine waliokuwapo hapo uwanjani. Bado sielewi alijitahidi vipi iwapo kweli ndege ilishapata hitilafu.

    hao walioanguka handeni walikuwa na ndege nadhani ya world war two na sidhani kama ilikuwa na mechanism ya kueject rubani, ni ndege iliyopitwa na wakati mno actually walikuwa wanatembea na kifo wlichokuwa wanakijua

    or human error or non-maintenance.
    how did the "wenzake" know that? the thing was in a tailspin headed to the ground, how we know he had the option of deploying functioning eject systems before we say he chose death?

    Asante sana Kichuguu, kwa kunikumbusha hili.

    Nakumbuka sana siku hiyo, ilikuwa ni Jumatatu ya 1 Septemba 1980 na wakati huo nilikuwa darasa la tano (STD V). Ile ilikuwa ni habari ya kushitua sana.

    Ni miaka thelathini tu imepita lakini hatuna kumbukumbu, hata hatumjui ni rubani gani. Aibu gani hii!

    Lakini ndege huwa na communication system kwa hivyo ikitokea hitilafu pilot huwa anaripoti kwenye ground. Labda alikuwa anatoa taarifa hizo
    kwa ground crew ndio maana watu wengine walijua nini kinatokea.

    Naikumbuka hiyo issue vizuri sana. Niliwahi kusikia wengine walipokuwa wanarudi nyumbani baada ya vita walipata ajali pale kwenye mlima Kitonga na kufariki.

    Kama ni hvyo ni kweli alikuwa shujaa hasa, maana aliona maisha yake is nothing kuliko ya umati, japo nina wasiwasi na hili. Kwa ujumla ni kwamba askari yeyote yule anapopoteza maisha yake akiwa kazini basi huwa ni shujaa hiyo haipingiki. Lakini kama ndege ile ilikuwa na mechanism kwa nini yule mwanafunzi wake asi eject kama ilivyo hapa chini? na yeye kuendelea kuangaika nayo?.


    Inawezekana kabisa alifikiria consequences ambazo angezipata kwa kuachia ndege iharibike, hili nalo linaweza kuwa factor katika nchi masikini kama Tanzania yenye ndege za kuhesabu. Huenda mawazo yalikuwa katika kuinusuru ndege zaidi kuliko maisha. Maana huenda kwa kutokuwa na advanced technology ya kudetect matatizo ya ndege angeng'ang'aniwa kuwa ni mzembe katia hasara jeshi kwa kuachia ndege ianguke. Lakini pamoja na yote haya kweli marehemu wale ni mashujaa wetu na wanastahili heshima kwa kujitolea maisha yao kwa ajili ya nchi yao.

    Nyingi ya jet fighters za JWTZ zina 'complications' kwenye 'ejection seat' system zake. Hata JWTZ wanakiri hili. Inapotokea ajali inakuwa ni vigumu sana kwa marubani kutumia hiyo system. Labda utauliza kwanini? Nitajaribu kuelezea bila kuingia kwa undani sana kwa sababu ya unyeti wa hili suala.

    JWTZ wana ndege za Mchina na Mrusi. Zile za Mchina ndiyo haswa zina matatizo matatu makubwa.

    1.Mechanisim ya hizo ndege za Mchina na ya kizamani (kama zilivyo ndege zenyewe). Ndege inapopata tatizo angani inabidi rubani a-perform stages mbili. Stage ya kwanza ni kufungua kitu kinachoitwa 'canopy' (kile kitu kama karai la glass linalomfunika pilot). Likishafunguka inafuata stage ya pili...ku-eject ile seat yake ambayo inakuwa imefungwa parachute. Sasa hii huwa inawachanganya sana marubani wanapopatwa na ajali. Kuna cases za marubani kusahau ile stage ya kwanza (ya kufungua canopy) na wanaenda stage two (ku-eject seat waliyokalia). Matokeo yake wanajibamiza kwenye canopy na ndege inaanguka huku wakiwa nadani na kufariki.(kumbuka inatoka kwa force kali)

    2.Ndege za Mchina (za wakati huo) zimetengenezwa kwa kuzingatia maumbo ya Wachina.. ufupi. Hivyo kuna cases ilishawahi kutokea ya rubani ku-perform stages zote mbili mbili nilizoelezea hapo juu lakini wakati wana-eject miguu (kwa sababu ni mirefu kuliko ya wachina) ikajigoga kwenye 'dash board' ya ndege na ikakatika.
    3. System yenyewe (zile buttons) zimekaa kwenye angle mbaya ambayo inakuwa ni challenge ya aina ya pekee kuweza 'kuziona' na kuzi-operate wakati wa ajali.

    Mwisho ni vizuri kukumbuka kuwa siyo kila technical fault inampa rubani muda wa kutumia hii system. inategemea na nature ya ajali.

    Rubani akiitwa SAIDI KARAMA, alizikwa siku ya jumatano katika makaburi ya Kisutu, maiti ilitokea mtaa wa Congo nyumba namba 40, mahali palipokuwa na ule mti mkubwa uliokuwa unatumiwa sasa na wanga wa mitaa ya Kariakoo,maarufu kama MTAMBANI maziko yaliongozwa na Mzee Kawawa,sina hakika by then alikuwa ni waziri mkuu au waziri wa ulinzi.

    Mkuu ndege iliyoanguka mwaka 1980 ni aina ya MIG 17(au za muundo wa aina hiyo).Hizi ni za kichina.

    Mimi nilishuhudia kwa macho yangu nikiwa ghorofa ya 9, Hall II,UDSM.
    Ghafla mtangazaji (mwanamke )alianza kulalama kuwa "ndege hiyo inakuja kwa kasi ,inataka kwenda chini..." na mara akakatwa sauti.
    Mimi nikakimbilia balcony kutazama na nikaona MOTO MKUBWA upande wa Uwanja wa Taifa.Tayari ile ndege ilianduka na umati mkubwa uliokuwepo ulitahayari.
    Mwalimu aliamuru gwaride liendelee na baadaye Mzee Kawawa akatangazakuanguka kwa ndege ilepalepale uwanjani na Jeshi kupoteza marubani wawili ambao walifanya runs nyingi katika Vita ya Kagera.

    Moja wapo wa makosa yaliyojitokeza ni kuwa ndege hizi zilikuwa chini mno-hivyo kukosa maneuverability space.

    Asanteni Son of Alaska na Fernandes kwa kuweka rekodi hii sawa. Kwa kweli watu wa aina hii wanatakiwa watajwe mara kwa mara ili vijana waweze kuwakumbuka.

    Mwenyezi Mungu awalaze pema peponi kwa kuweza kuokoa roho za watu wengi pale at the expense of their lives.

    Ile ajali ya ndege imebaki kwenye kumbukumbu za wengi walioshuhudia na kusikia kwenye radio, enzi hizo hakukuwa na TV. Walikuwa marubani wawili, Capt. Said Karama na Capt. Abdallah (?) Kikunda. Inawezekana jina la kwanza la marehemu Kikunda likawa sio sahihi, lakini jina la ukoo ni Kikunda. Nadhani baada ya hapo ilipita miaka mingi bila kuwa na hizo air shows, sina hakika kama zimerudishwa miaka hii. Mungu Awalaze pema.

    Jamaa zangu waling'ang'ania sana twende siku ile mimi nikawatolea nje na kuwaambia kutakuwa na umati mkubwa wa watu na ndege za kivita zinaweza kabisa kuanguka na kusababisha maafa makubwa sana, hivyo hatukwenda. Ni kweli kama si juhudi za yule shujaa pilot kuhakikisha ile ndege inaangukia mbali na ule umati wa watu basi watu wengi sana wangepoteza maisha siku ile.

    Nakiri sijui ni ndege ya aina gani iliyoanguka mwaka huo, lakini MIG 17 ni ndege za Kirusi. Kitu walichofanya ni kuwapa China na baadhi ya nchi za Kikomunisti za wakati ule kama Poland licence ya kuzitengeneza. Version ya Kichina YA MIG 17 inaitwa F5 (ambayo Tanzania inayo) au jina jingine ni Shenyang J5. Hii ina uwezo wa kuchukua marubani wawili na hutumika kama kiunganishi cha mafunzo ya kutoka kwenye ndege ndogo zaidi yenye panga boi moja (primary trainer 5) kwenda kwenye F6 ambayo huchukua rubani mmoja tu.

    Mig 17 zilkuwa ndege za kuaminika sana. Katika rekodi zangu za vita ya Kagera, hakuna ndege hata moja ya Mig 17 iliyoleta tafrani. Ndege zilizokuwa na matatizo ni zile Shenyang 5 za kichina. Unfortunatley, pamoja na wachina kukua kiteknolojia leo, bado teknolojia yao ya ndege ni hafifu sana. Ndiyo maana niliposikia kuwa walikuwa na mpango wa kununua ATC na kuteletea ndege zao aina ya MA-5 nilikuwa nimejiapisha kuwa sitapanda tena ATC. Hata wao wenyewe haziwapandi hizo MA-5 na walishaziondoa kwenye service baada ya kuanguka mara kadhaa; wanaziuza nchi za nje tu kwa muundo wa buy one get one free.

    Asanteni waungwana kwa kutupasha habari manake nilikuwa sijawahi kusikia hii habari mahali popote, kipindi hicho sikuwepo. Naamini tupo wengi ambao hii habari ni mpya kabisa kwetu ingawa ilitokea miaka 30 iliyopita.
