Drawing from his personal experience, the President said he bought the land on which his country home in Rwakitura stands with his first salary as a primary school teacher. He was 21 at the time, the President said. Meanwhile, his colleagues were learning how to dance instead of saving.

He said Ugandans today are not much different from his friends, choosing showy and hedonistic lifestyles over frugality. People borrow money to throw expensive parties, and spend their salaries on cars. “Why should you buy a car before you buy land?” the President asked.

“The Chinese save 52% of their earnings. Expensive lifestyle is not good. How come Indians who came here when they are poor are now employing you?” he said.
