Mtaalam maarufu wa madini na vito vya thamani raia wa Scotland ameuawa nchini Kenya baada ya kuvamiwa na kundi la watu waliojizatiti kwa marungu, mikuki na mishale.

Mtaalam huyo Campbell Bridges, mwenye umri wa miaka 71, alishambuliwa na kundi la watu 20 katika kitalu anachomiliki cha hekari 600 karibu na mji wa kusini wa Voi.

Alijaribu kupambana na watu hao akishirikiana na mwanawe Bruce pamoja na wafanyakazi wake wanne raia wa Kenya lakini alikufa mara alipofikishwa hospitalini kutokana na majeraha aliyopata.

Polisi wanaendelea kuchunguza shambulio hilo ambalo linahusishwa na mzozo wa miaka mitatu wa kumiliki eneo hilo la machimbo lililokuwa linamilikiwa na Bwana Bridges.

Watu walioshuhudia wamesema mtaalam huyo alikufa kutokana na majeraha ya kushambuliwa kwa kisu. Hakuna mtu mwengine aliyekufa katika shambulio hilo lililotokea siku ya Jumanne.

Kenyan police: Arrest in Scottish geologist death​

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan police have arrested the suspected mastermind in the killing of a Scottish-born geologist, who was attacked last week by men armed with arrows, spears and machetes, in an apparent dispute over mining rights.

Alfred Makogo Njiruka, the chairman of a small miners association, was arrested Wednesday in Taveta, about 225 miles (360 kilometers) from the capital, Nairobi.

"We believe he is the mastermind behind the killing," the area's police chief Herbert Khaemba said. Police were still searching for other suspects.

About a dozen people attacked 72-year-old Campbell Bridges last week after he stopped to remove a log blocking a road, police said. Bridges had been driving to a mining camp by Tsavo West National Park, near where he lived.

In the 1960s, Bridges discovered a rare green variety of garnet, first in modern-day Zimbabwe and later in Kenya's neighbor Tanzania. Today it is mined chiefly in Tanzania and Kenya, and is named tsavorite after the park.

Bridges had received threats from people disputing his right to use a mining permit in the area, police said. Bridges had been mining for gemstones in the vicinity of Tsavo since the early 1970s.

His son, who was present during the attack, told The Associated Press that he recognized Njiruka as one of the assailants but that he believed the mastermind of the attack was still on the run. Bruce Bridges also said he had given police a list of people he suspects were behind the killing.

"I am not scared of these people," he said.

Southeast Kenya is sparsely populated and impoverished, because its dry, low-lying land is poor for most crops. The area's gemstone riches are mined by handful of companies. Many locals eke out their livings on plantations growing sisal, a plant that produces stiff fibers for making rope.

Events leading to the death of Mr Campbell Bridges, the British miner murdered in Kenya two weeks ago, point to an elaborate plan to gain control of the mining of rare and sought-after gemstones.

Mr Bridges’ son Bruce claims a fierce three-year battle for control of the mines of tsavorite -- the precious stone “discovered” by his father -- involving illegal mining, a politician and the local community preceded his death.

At the time of going to press, the area OCPD confirmed that one person suspected to be the leader of the gang that attacked Mr Bridges had been arrested.

The mines, leased to Campbell Bridges since 1971, had been attracting good money since 2003 from sales of tsavorite to jewellers and collectors in the United States and Europe.

Bruce Bridges told the Sunday Nation that certain people, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, tried to convince the owner of the ranch to strip Bridges of the mining rights and award them the lease to them instead.

Even though the ranch owner had a lease agreement with the Bridges, the people who wanted a piece of the action moved into the mines anyway.

“They (the illegal miners) did not leave. They operated several mines within a ranch on which the Bridges had legal mining rights,” said former area District Commissioner Kang’ethe Thuku, now stationed in Nakuru.

After going over the dispute, a newly appointed commissioner of mines ruled in favour of Bridges Exploration.

“But the businessman found another backer, a politician who whipped up emotions of the residents telling them the minerals belonged to the local people and anyone else benefiting from the minerals was an outsider,” the younger Bridges said.

Area Member of Parliament Calist Mwatela disputes Bruce Bridges’ claim, saying he did not know of any political interference with the activities of local businesses.

“There is no interference from any politician in the area. Businessmen are let to get on with their business as the law requires them to,” Mr Mwatela told the Sunday Nation.

Mr Bridges said that in September 2008, his father went to one of the illegal mines — their number had grown from three to five — to enquire whether they had received an eviction notice.
