CASH amounting to about 100 million/- has been stolen from the famous Impala Hotel here at the time when the wife of the hotels director also disappeared.
The theft and the wifes disappearance happened last Sunday evening. Police reports indicate that the stolen funds, that were taken from the tourist hotels safe include Tanzanian shillings amounting to over 52 million/-, US dollars valued at 16,000/-, Kenyan currency reaching 200,000/- and assortments of other foreign money, all amounting to over 100 million/-.
The theft was reported at the central police station at about 4 pm, on Sunday evening by one of the Impala hotels employees, Mr Justine Laizer, Arusha Regional Police Commander Matei Basilio said on Monday.
Initial police investigations have found that the only person who had access to the highly-secured safe was a high-ranking hotel worker, Veronica Meleu Mrema. According to the testimony by several hotel workers, Veronica was spotted entering the hotels office, located in Kijenge area at about 8am in the morning but nobody saw her leave the premises.
Later that evening, the safe was found open and empty, prompting them to contact their director. It later turned out that Veronica happened to be the wife of the Director of Impala Group of Hotels, Mr Awio Meleu Mrema.
Mr Mrema said his wife usually had authority to take money from the hotel and bank it. However, on that particular day, she simply took the money and neither banked it nor was she to be seen again.
The Impala hotel boss is now faced with two major tasks; finding his suddenly disappeared wife as well as recovering the money. Police have launched a search for Veronica.
