NAIROBI, Kenya - The mother of a Somali pirate who pleaded guilty to charges of hijacking a U.S.-flagged ship and kidnapping its captain is appealing to President Obama to pardon her son and grant him citizenship.Adar Abdirahman Hassan told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday that the American people should forgive her son, Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse, because he was duped into joining the piracy business by adult friends.
Prosecutors branded Muse the ringleader of four pirates who attacked the Maersk Alabama in April 2009 off the coast of Somalia.

Hassan, speaking from a town in central Somalia, said the fear of the death penalty led her son to plead guilty Tuesday in a federal court in New York.
