Limited access to internet services in most parts of the country has been cited as among major reasons leading to Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro, not to be nominated as one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, the House heard yesterday.

Natural Resources and Tourism minister Ezekiel Maige said since the voting campaign started very few Tanzanians were able to participate due poor network connectivity and coverage.

“We have limited access to internet services, as a result only urban dwellers were able to take part in the voting while in other countries people were massively voting through the internet,” said the minister.

He said when the government decided to negotiate with mobile phone companies to allow free voting through short messages (SMS) it was too late.

Maige said that in Africa there were two mountains which had been proposed as the new natural wonders: Mt Kilimanajaro and Table Mountain in South Africa. He said that both mountains failed to make it to the list, which comprised 28 contestants worldwide.

He said his ministry, in collaboration with Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), conducted a vote-Mt-Kilimanjaro campaign in and outside the country, adding that the campaign had helped a lot in advertising the mountain abroad through a designed website,

The minister was responding to a supplementary question from Chaani lawmaker Ali Juma Haji (CCM), who wanted to know the reasons for Mt Kilimanjaro's failure to make it to the new world wonders list despite the massive campaign mounted by the government.

In his principal question, Juma had demanded government clarification whether Mt Kilimanjaro was in Kenya or Tanzania because Kenyans had been advertising it as being in their country.

He had also wanted to know government strategies to advertise the mountain so that visitors could come straight in the country instead of viewing it from Kenya.

Responding, Maige said that Tanzania was an independent country and Mt Kilimanjaro was in its bordersa. He said that Kenyans had never announced that Mt Kilimanjaro was in their country, but rather they had been advertising that while in Kenya one could clearly view it.

Elaborating, he said it was impossible for tourists to climb Mt Kilimanjaro from the Kenyan side because there were only six routes to get to its peak, and all were in Tanzania. He mentioned them as Rongai, Marangu, Mweka, Machame, Londrosi and Umbwe.

“For tourists to climb the mountain they should come into the country, and the Kenyans are aware of the fact,” he noted.

He said the government has taken several initiatives to advertise the mountain outside the country, including adverts in public buses in the UK, in-flight posters and arrangement of trips for journalists from different countries worldwide.
