    Former Miss Tanzania contestant raped

THE Marketing Manager of the Dollywood and Konic Company Limited, Patrick Troy Mbasha (21), appeared before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam today charged with raping a Miss 2008 Tanzania contestant (name withheld).

Mbasha, a resident of Mbezi area denied the charge before Principal Resident Magistrate Gabriel Mirumbe.

He was released on bail until April 5, when the case will be mentioned as investigations, according to the prosecution, have not been completed.

The prosecution, led by State Attorney Mather Misonge, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 14, this year, at Mbezi Beach in Kinondoni District.

Mbasha is alleged to have carnal knowledge with the alleged victim without her consent. No further details were produced surrounding the commission of the offence.

After completion of the investigations, his case will be heard in camera as the law prohibits the trial in open court.

Meanwhile Miss Tanzania Organising Committee has been challenged to scout for disciplined and quality beauty girls, who could win the country honours at the world stage.

The challenge was made in Dar es Salaam today by the Director of Culture Development in the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports, Herman Mwansoko, when opening a seminar for Miss Tanzania Agents from all mainland regions.

Mwansoko, who represented Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said the government and the public in general always wanted to see the country representatives going places at the international stage.

He said it was possible for Tanzania to compete favourably at the international stage, because he said, the country is endowed with quality and beautiful young girls who need to be encouraged to enroll in the contest.

"As you (agents) prepare to start the scouting process at the lower level, please make sure that you get the quality and disciplined girls,' he said.

Of recent, winners of the annual beauty contest have found themselves facing criminal charges, a scenario that created more questions than answers among beauty industry watchers, with some suggesting that the contest be scrapped off.

They said it is shame that some winners of the crown, have failed to serve as true country ambassadors and role models.

They have also failed to inspire other Tanzanians especially young women. Reigning Miss Tanzania Miriam Gerald was recently arrested for assault, causing bodily harm and destruction of property worth hundreds of thousands of shillings.

The 22-year-old did not make history, as Wema Sepetu, Miss Tanzania 2006, had a similar feat earlier last year, when she was also charged with assault and destruction of property.

On his side, Director of Lino International Agency, who are the organizers of Miss Tanzania Organising Committee, Hashim Lundenga, said the event of such a magnitude could not be a smooth sailing.

"There are always ups and downs and the government should continue to support us as we strive to make sure that everything goes well," he said.

She is one of many young girls in Tanzania who felt victims of "virtual high life", and fake fame!!
