Viongozi, kaeni chini, chukueni hatua sasa.

Wild animals flee Akagera into Tanzania

    By KABONA ESIARA Rwanda Today

    Posted Saturday, September 1 2012 at 16:57

    IN SUMMARY

    • The Rwanda Development Board said at least 20 per cent of the park was destroyed by the fire, suspected to have been started by poachers 30 days ago.
    • The park is located in eastern Rwanda bordering Tanzania.
    • The fire that started in Nyamatete north of the park four weeks ago was contained last week following a joint effort by police, defence forces and the local community.

The fierce fire that razed a section of Akagera National Park has forced wild animals to flee to Tanzania.

The Rwanda Development Board said at least 20 per cent of the park was destroyed by the fire, suspected to have been started by poachers 30 days ago.

The park is located in eastern Rwanda bordering Tanzania.

A source at the park told Rwanda Today that large part of the park has been destroyed, leaving wild animals with nothing to feed on.

However, a statement issued by RDB quoting Akagera Management Company said only 20 per cent of the park was burnt.

“The park management is hiding something. About 80 per cent of the park vegetation was burnt. The areas that was not affected are those surrounding the six lakes and the swamps,” said a source who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation.

The fire that started in Nyamatete north of the park four weeks ago was contained last week following a joint effort by police, defence forces and the local community.

To prevent such disasters in future, RDB’s head of tourism and conservation Rica Rwigamba said monitoring teams have been reinforced and numerous fire breaks will be put in place to avoid fire spreading in case of an outbreak in future.

Mr Rwigamba further appealed to the community near the park to avoid all activities that may ignite any fire, considering that savannah parks are prone to fire outbreaks.
