MDG's - HABARI INA WALAKINI?

Besides Bangladesh, five other countries, three from Africa and two from Asia received the UN Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Awards for their significant achievements towards attaining the goal.

In September 2000, world leaders endorsed the Millennium Declaration, a commitment to work together to build a safer, more prosperous and equitable world. The Declaration was translated into a roadmap setting out eight time-bound and measurable goals to be reached by 2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): They include goals and targets on poverty, hunger, maternal and child mortality, disease, inadequate shelter, gender inequality, environmental degradation and the Global Partnership for Development.

Bangladesh received the UN award for its remarkable achievements in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) particularly in reducing child mortality. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accepted the award at a colourful function at New York's Astoria Hotel on Sunday.

Nepal has received a Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Award for significantly improving maternal health. Nepal's permanent representative to the UN, Gyan Chandra Acharya, received the award on behalf of the government at a function in New York, Sunday. Secretary at the health ministry Dr Sudha Sharma was also present at the awards ceremony.

Nepal was selected for the award from among 49 Least Developed Countries (LDC)s for the outstanding national leadership, commitment and progress towards achievement of the MDG goal related to improving maternal health.

Cambodia has been presented with a Millennium Development Goals Award for its national leadership, commitment and progress towards achievement of Goal 6 - Combating HIV, malaria and other diseases.

Cambodia has been honored within the 'Government' category of the annual Awards initiative, presented at a high-profile event in New York City.

Sierra Leone received the United Nations Millenium Development Goal ( MDG ) Award in recognition of President Ernest Koroma 's remarkable leadership commitment and progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Goal Six. During a grand MDG Awards Banquet on Sunday night

Liberia has been named as the winner of this year's prestigious Millennium Development Goal Three (MDG 3) award for outstanding leadership, commitment and progress toward the achievement of the MDG-3 through the promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment across the country.

Rwanda has been nominated for two Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) awards for its efforts to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.

Rwanda was nominated for the awards in two categories, MDG Goal 4 of Reducing Child Mortality and Goal 5 of Improving Maternal Health which target reducing the mortality rate of children under five years by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015 and the maternal mortality rate by three quarters, respectively.

Where is Tanzania?

Upuuzi mtupu.

Soma hapa uelewe tulipo:

According to a report prepared by a Washington Think Tank, Tanzania is lagging behind fellow East African Community member states in achieving the millennium development goals targets by 2015.

"Who are the MDG trailblazers? A new MDG Progress Index" expresses disappointment on Tanzania, saying its high ratings in institutional performance, has not been replicated on MDGs.

“In fact, Tanzania’s performance is below the required achievement trajectory for every indicator examined,” said one of the researchers Ben Leo.

The country is, however, on the right track on primary education completion and reduction in child mortality rate, having achieved almost 50 percent of the required trajectory.

Uganda is the top ‘MDG trailblazer’ in the region, saying the landlocked country has made tremendous progress on majority of the indicators. “Africa accounts for four of the 15 countries ranked as “trailblazers,” on track to reach at least half of the examined MDG indicators by the 2015 target year. ” said Leo.

The researchers from Centre for Global Development allocated Uganda a progress index score of 5.0, having recorded four indicators above the trajectory threshold. The indicators are poverty reduction, ratio of girls and boys in primary and secondary education, HIV/AIDS prevalence rate and access to improved water source. The country is also making commendable progress on prevalence of under-nourished and maternal mortality ratio.

Kenya’s performance is considered average with a score of 3.0. The two indicators above the trajectory threshold in the country are poverty reduction and primary education completion rate. Progress is also being made on the girls: boys ratio in primary and secondary education and access to safe water sources.

Rwanda has a progress index of 3.0, with two indicators above the trajectory threshold. They are girls: boys ratio in primary and secondary education and reduction in HIV/AIDS prevalence rate. The country also has achieved at least 50 percent of the target in reducing child and maternal mortality.

Recognizing that conflict-torn countries account for most of the “MDG laggards,” the centre identified Tanzania, also considered the most stable in the region, as “perhaps the most surprising and interesting case”.

It is not known why Tanzania is unlikely to meet any of the eight development goals by the 2015 target date.

The top MDG progress performers are Honduras with a score of 7.0, Kyrgyz Republic (6.0), Vietnam (6.0), Laos (6.0) and Cambodia (6.0).

In Africa the top performers are Ethiopia with an index performance of 5.5, Burkina Faso (5.5), Ghana (5.0), Malawi (5.0) and Uganda (5.0).

The overall lowest performers are Guinea Bissau with an index of 0.0, Afghanistan (0.0), Congo-DRC (0.5) and Burundi (0.5), Papua New Guinea (1.0), Tanzania (1.0) and Zimbabwe (1.0).

By the way hao jamaa unaweza kukuta hawajawahi kufika hata Tanzania na data za ushindi wamepewa na serikali.

Na sijui wamepita eneo gani kuhakiki (proof) their findings, honestly, am lost!

Ngoja nitoe mchango wangu nami!

In 2000, 189 world leaders including Tanzania committed to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ranging from halving extreme poverty and hunger and rolling back killer diseases such as AIDS and Malaria and providing universal primary education. In short MDGs consists of

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce Child Mortality Rate
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development
Political commitment is highly needed to achieve these MDGs, wanaposema "to achieve universal primary education, this goal should go hand in hand with the quality. I am not convinced Tanzania has achieved any of the MDGs, sababu kwanza Ufisadi tulionao ni wa kufa mtu. Umasikini na ufukara uliokubuhu umeongezeka sana, hasa kipindi hiki cha Kikwete hata tukienda kwenye elimu ya msingi there no many new primary school rather than flooding the existing ones with poor students, with no books and teachers.

This is a million dollar question, Pinda, Kinana na Joti (Kikwete) hawawezi kujibu. There is no statistic package that can convince otherwise. Our economy is going down, shilling inashuka kila kukicha kwa sisi kufikia malengo ya MDGs chini ya hawa CCM ni ndoto. Lets agree to bury the MDGs in the graveyard we can't move ahead chini ya uongozi wa Kikwete
