FIFTEEN people died on the spot and 48 were severely injured when a lorry heading to the auction market overturned at Mnenia village in Kondoa District, Dodoma Region.

The accident occurred at around 8.00 am on Friday morning, 30kms from Kondoa town.

Eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident said the lorry was overloaded with luggage and passengers and was heading for the market from Kondoa town.

The Dodoma Regional Medical Officer, Dr Godfrey Mtei, confirmed the accident adding that 40 people were admitted to the hospital while 8 others were discharged.

Dr Mtei said some of the injured were in a critical condition and to save their lives, they have decided to send three medical doctors and two nurses to Kondoa Hospital.

"We have sent three medical doctors and two nurses, a laboratory technician, to support the few medical experts at the district hospital," he said.

Apart from medical experts, various medical equipment has been sent, including blood for those who suffered severe bleeding.

The Dodoma Regional Police Commander, Zelothe Stephen, confirmed the accident but did not give details as he was busy with the national leaders presently attending the CCM National Executive Committee meeting.

The accident has occurred amidst public outcry over increasing road accidents claiming lives of thousands of people. The trend has been attributed to reckless driving including speeding, overloading and unauthorized vehicles carrying passengers.
