MAKONGORO NYERERE NEEDS PATENT LAW SCHOOLING!

In Kwimba parliamentary campaigns, a Julius Kambarage Nyerere scion one Makongoro Nyerere has raised issues that fatuously invoke patrilineal rights, survival of a patriarchy society and the legal effects of a namesake in the patent law. What Makongoro Nyerere wants is for the electorate of Kwimba constituency to reject the candidacy of one Chadema aspirant Ms. Leticia Nyerere. Makongoro is importuning Kwimba voters to spurn her candidacy because she is no longer a Nyerere after she had jettisoned her marriage despite lobola of thirty cattle changing hands! But Makongoro is no ordinary citizen, at all. In the advent of reintroduction of multiparty elections in 1995, he successfully vied for Arusha Urban constituency under NCCR-Mageuzi flag only to change tack following his election being overturned for massive improprieties by the High Court. NCCR-Mageuzi internal snafu may have accelerated his departure from the coldness of opposition politics. Thereafter, he returned to the warmth of a political party his father helped to establish: CCM. Currently he is CCM regional chair for Mara region. Hence, under these circumstances Makongoro is not an impartial observer. Makongoro is deeply disturbed Leticia Nyerere may bag in a Kwimba parliamentary seat partially because of a Nyerere namesake and he is determined to torpedo that from happening. Makongoro is not disputing whether Leticia has the necessary résumé to be a Kwimba Parliamentarian but since he is on CCM side then a Chadema victory under the J.K Nyerere auspice is totally unacceptable! Since Leticia Nyerere is a capable candidate and she is a drop in the ocean of female candidates I feel also very strongly I have to come to her rescue. Under African customs, once a woman has been married to her husband she is entitled to add her husband’s surname to her name and Leticia too deserves that matrimonial heirloom. A broken marriage for whatever reasons do not in anyway take that matrimonial patrimony away. This is also confirmed by Nyerere dynasty because it has never protested to her; prior to this election, from using the clan name but Makongoro is wavering to preen his CCM bosses’ egos. In addition to that, you would have thought the person brandishing a locus standi on the matter was Leticia’s former husband: Do you recall Prince Charles vs. Diana princess of Wales’s saga? An ex-husband was the one to plead to the court of law during divorce hearing to decide whether ex-wife should keep the family nominal or not but Makongoro is certainly a marital gatecrasher. I can bet my last coin Makongoro will not be remonstrating whether Leticia is entitled to add a Nyerere clan name in her nomenclature column after this election is over because he is a smart guy to know better: Nobody really cares. The Nyereres being mostly Roman Catholic followers, we learn from their oracles that when it comes to marriage: “What God has joined together let no man put asunder”... Even if Leticia is not with her husband for whatever reasons, in the eyes of the Church no human being can invalidate what the Almighty God has ordained as sacred marriage. From this holy teaching, obviously Makongoro can not in anyway be on the right side of the R.C theology. From the patent law, the titular Nyerere is owned by none in particular and this may be informational to Mr. Makongoro. Well, Mr. Makongoro you can not proclaim rights which were not personal to you in the first place. There are many Nyereres all over the World let alone in Butiama sanctuary to begin with. On gender sensitivities, Makongoro is surely way off the nobler watermark. Few women now on campaign trail deserve our collective deference but not unsolicited pillory. If one feels the urgency of rebuking female candidacy then one ought to carefully reassert those rights in a manner which will not in anyway accentuate gender blatant biases already suffusing in our society similar to Mr. Makongoro’s faux pas. I like reading your well written articles, and I think I have read all of them so far. However, they are difficult to read as they are composed in one long paragraph. They would have been easier to read, if you broke them into several paragraphs. Continue with the good work, though!
