Tanzanian President John Magufuli, South Sudan's Salva Kiir and other foreign powers are funding opposition chief Raila Odinga to destabilise Kenya, Starehe MP Maina Kamanda said yesterday.

"Raila has been touring all over. We know he is seeking funds from these governments with an intention of destabilising Kenya. You go ahead but we will not allow you," he said.

Kamanda spoke during a press conference at a Nairobi hotel. He was with Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru and Embakasi West's John Ndirangu.

The State on Monday, without naming countries, claimed there are individuals working with Kenya's neighbours to cause trouble in the country.

Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe said intelligence reports point to some individuals who are working with the unnamed countries to ferment public unrest.

In what is likely to spark a diplomatic row between Kenya and the countries, Kiraithe spoke of a wider scheme to “create conditions of instability, insecurity, lawlessness and strife.”

He said the schemers are out to overthrow the government.

“The Government considers these contemptible undertakings to be a betrayal of Kenya and Kenyans. These are acts of treason,” Kiraithe said.

He said they will soon announce the investigation findings and unmask the persons at the centre of the scheme.

“In due course the government will be revealing the results of our investigations, and unmasking these despicable traitors,” he said.

Kiraithe said a National Security Advisory Council meeting held on Monday resolved that those who collaborate with Kenya's enemies are also enemies of the state.

“Their acts will be met with the swift, full and unmitigated wrath of the law. We urge public patience on this matter and promise to be uncompromising in our quest for national security,” he said.

Recently, the council claimed that Cord was planning a civilian coup and its demands for the replacement of the IEBC Commissioners was just a smokescreen.

However Cord co-principal leader Moses Wetang'ula dismissed the allegations as "juvenile" and challenged the state to use its machinery to substantiate the "wild claims".

The opposition has been at loggerheads with the government over the push for IEBC commissioners to quit office on grounds that the latter cannot be trusted with the management of the 2017 polls.

An African Union observer mission has called for urgent electoral and judicial reforms in Kenya to avert a crisis during 2017 General Election.

The strongly-worded draft report by two observers appointed by the AU will increase the pressure on top politicians, especially those from the government side, to engage in talks with various players to agree on a broadly acceptable roadmap to the elections.

The report, seen by the Sunday Nation, says lack of trust by the opposition in the electoral commission and the confusion over the fate of Supreme Court judges could potentially pave the way for chaos.

It calls for honest talks between the various parties and just stops short of prescribing an overhaul of the existing electoral commission.

“The call by the opposition Cord for an urgent roadmap to create a level playing ground for the 2017 elections cannot be dismissed,” reads the draft statement, prepared by Mr Jibrin Ibrahim from Nigeria and Ms Titi Pitso from South Africa.

There has been a prolonged stalemate over the fate of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) with Cord declaring that it has no faith in the current commissioners who it describes as partisan, while the Jubilee coalition has labelled the opposition sore losers and asked them to take their case to existing channels including Parliament.

Three weeks of demonstrations by Cord supporters in parts of the country resulted in several deaths and drew in diplomats and the clergy, all of who called for talks between the political parties.

Cord leaders have suspended the demos for 10 days but said they will resume the protests if no accord is reached.

In the AU observers’ report, the authors flag a number of issues, including the danger posed by a Supreme Court that is not fully constituted and which might not enjoy the level of trust it commanded in the 2013 election.

“The state of the Judiciary is very shaky. The Supreme Court is in dire straits,” the observers note.
The AU team calls on various stakeholders to move quickly to change the situation.

“The Supreme Court will have a big arbitral (role) to play in the 2017 elections and it is imperative that it has the credibility to act with authority. It is, therefore, urgent that these issues be sorted out before the elections.”

The AU observer mission is part of a new approach by the African Union to “foster credible elections and promote Africa’s democratisation and good governance” by not just focusing on the event of the election but by monitoring the situation leading up to voting day and after the poll.

The report describes it as a move to a “methodological approach to election observation from one based on pre-election assessments and election-day observation to long-term election observation based on the electoral-cycle approach, which include post-election assessment missions”.

The observer team did not, however, meet with any government officials and primarily relied on representations by civil society.

“The team would have liked to have met more people particularly from both the opposition and ruling party and from government but due to circumstances beyond the mission’s control, this was not possible,” the draft states.

The draft does not also include the views of the IEBC, after the observers were caught up in the protests.

PROTESTERS BRUTALISED

“The writers of these reports were teargassed on May 9 for being near the vicinity of the IEBC during the protests. The world media carried distressing footage of Cord alliance protesters being brutalised by the police on May 16.”

The report, nonetheless, strongly notes the reservations that players within civil society have on the impartiality of IEBC commissioners and especially zeroes in on the chairman Issack Hassan and questions his ability to command the respect of both sides in a heated election contest.

“The high stakes politics also affects the IEBC, which is seen by the opposition as an agent of the ruling party which...

Kunadawa,

Burukenge Achiek tho is exposing how ignorant she is to happenings in Kenya. The decision to have Nakuru then Mombasa to host National celebrations this year was made with the full blessings and input of the 47 Governors way far back in December 2015.

Next year could be Kisumu/Kakamega and a County in NEP.

But fools think that it was moved to Nakuru due to their Mondays utoto!

This does not augur well for the EAC Community, During the just concluded Tanzanina elections, Grapevine heard it tha Kenyattas Jubilee govt were in support of Lowassa while Odingas Cord supported President Magufuli. If this is the case then the EAC is headed for tough times

Political support by foreign countries is a known phenomenon. For instance, USA is always known to fund political parties in most of African countries.
But I doubt Salvar Kir or even Magufuli have the balls to fund and support coup in Kenya. This is far fetched, in my opinion.

I think the issue is about Raila s friendship with Tanzanian President. President Kenyatta has not been to Tanzania on a state visit since Rais Magufuli took over yet Raila has been invited there two times. I see 70s history repeating it self again

Where is Tanzania mentioned? Jamani, kwa kuwa rais wetu ana Urafiki usio na shaka na Odinga so you guys have turned hostile against sisi? Malizeni mambo yenu ya ukabila ndio mtuguse sisi,we know all the drama around there
Urafiki wa magu na Odinga ulikuwepo hata kabla ya magu kuwa Rais

Uhuru is feeling irrelevant now that even South Sudan is choosing to transport her oil via Uganda and Tanzania. Moreover South Sudan has decided to go after Arusha Roadmap to solve her internal conflicts. Upumbavu wa Wakikuyu wana-resort into accusing Magufuli. He should not waste time with losers! Magufuli is not Kikwete.

the government of kenya and opposition are messing up big time....they are breeding tribalsm and some kenyans are proud of it.an example the president telling mombasa residents should not complain when left out since they didnt vote for jubilee is just a huge blunder...tribalsm will swallow kenya alive

Kenyans have mastered the art of stealing, promoting tribalism and hurling insults, President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Wednesday.

Addressing Kenyan students in Israel, he admitted Kenya faces unending problems created by its own citizens.

Speaking in Swahili, Uhuru accused Kenyans of not supporting the government’s efforts to deal with the country’s problems.

“When we walk, it is crying ... it is stealing ... we have the expertise (laughs) ... of stealing, insulting each other, doing other evil things ... perpetuating tribalism,” he said.

“These others have come from different countries, united in uplifting the security and livelihood of their citizens. And even, we Kenyans, God has blessed us with a country that is 20 times better than the one we are in [Israel].” The President was on a state visit to Israel to woo investors.

He said Kenyans should focus on improving the country to see growth and improve the livelihoods of all its citizens.

“Please, let us learn from our friends and I am sure if we can, in a very short period of time, we can transform our country,” Uhuru said.

Hizo zote ni hasira za kuikosa pipeline ya Uganda na sasa wanajuwa kuwa ya South Sudan pia itaunganishwa na hiyo ya Uganda na pia kuikosa reli ya Rwanda na Burundi. Bandari Mombasa inadorora. Duh !

Lazima manyang'au wa panick.
