"Hi I am a little worried about next year on Kilimanjaro. I only have 2 clients so far. Compared to all my other trips, this is very little. The financial crisis has definitely made my customers go for my other expeditions, which are much cheaper. Kilimanjaro is by far my most expencive trip. You have to put pressure on the tourist-official down there. The prices are now so high for permits on Kilimanjaro and for the safari, that it is very difficult to sell this trip right now. I just had a telephone call with a colleague of mine yesterday, who is running a similar company in Norway, and he tell me that exactly the same thing is happening with his company. Down below I have listed up my expeditions, the price for the expedition and the price divided by each day we are travelling. You see clearly that the price for Kilimanjaro is extremely much higher pr. day than my other trips. All prices in Norwegian kroner (NOK). TRIP PRICE PRICE PR. DAY. CLIENT BOOKED FOR 2009/2010 Kilimanjaro 35 900,- 2990,- 2 Atlas-mountain 16 900,- 1536,- 7 Everest Base Camp 33 900,- 1540,- 9 Elbrus 24 900,- 1915,- 14 Aconcagua 2010 38 500,- 1480,- 12 Inca Trail 33 900,- 1994,- 53 Spitzbergen 15 900,- 1766,- 14 As you can see on the number of clients booked for 2009 and 2010 (so far) Kilimanjaro is my least popular trip. Of course I hope that I will have some more clients booking in the next few months, as january and february is my main booking period for Kili. The way the government down there suck money out of the tourist is horrible, both on Kili and safari. We paid close to 10 000 US$ for the Kilimanjaro permit for my last group (15 people). 10 000 US$ !!!!!! That is just insane to climb a mountain... To be honest I dont have much profit on Kilimanjaro anymore, not compared to the first years of business. It is specially bad when we all see that none of this money is beeing spent on the mountain. The roads are terrible, the toilets are terrible, and the so called clean-up expeditions are a joke!!! I dont understand what the national park authorities really are doing - and where they put all the money... As you understand I am a little frustrated..... The bottom line is that we have to do whatever we can to reduce the price for Kilimanjaro in the future. I will also have to look closely on my program to see if we can do anything, for instance go back to 2-day safari and so on. I really dont want to go down to 6-day expeditions on the mountain, I think 7 days are absolutely necessary for good acclimatization. Ok, we must just hope things will be better in the future, and that the permit fees will go down."
