Today is a November 1st, it's an important and historical day to our loved nation. It was in this day, Gen Amin, and his Ugandan forces invaded Tanzania. The war between Tanzania and Uganda started in October 1978 when Amin sent troops, who were still loyal to him, after mutineers, some of whom had fled to Tanzania.

Amin invaded our territory on 1st November 1978 and formally annexed a section across the Kagera river boundary. As history taught us, from ancestor till today, winning a war require a lot of things, i.e good planning, mobilization of the army, psychological and people's politicization. When Amin attacked Tanzania in October 1978, he proved to be a bogeyman that became real, but he found the nation prepared. On 22nd November 1978, Mwalimu Nyerere, addressed nation through the meeting with wazee wa Dar es salaam, and declared the war with Amin and outlined as:
Tanzania had the reason to fight Amin,

    was intent on fighting Amin

had the ability to defeat him.

When Mwalimu said that the war effort was not for the army alone but for the entire population, the nation understood him and the reaction was predictable.

The speed with which Tanzania mobilised was indeed astonishing. Few outsiders including Amin didn't expect the nation had such a capability. In a few weeks, the national army was expanded from less than 40 000 troops to over 100 000.
Recruiting officers had problems limiting the numbers selected. The criterion for a militia member was simply that if a person is willing, health, and must be enlisted.

One of an interesting and peculiar incidence was in January 1979, Makambako, Iringa where an elderly person refused to be turned away from the camp, because of his age. His logic was simple and clear: he did not feel to be too old to deal with Amin.
Most of the militias were employed in guarding vital installations and the southern border. There was hardly a Tanzanian who could not explain what was going on and why, such was the level of the people's politicization.

The Wasukuma of Shinyanga had their own way of expressing support for the war. They drove herds of cattle into the camp at Old Shinyanga to feed the soldiers. Nyerere mobilized his army and counter attacked.
In April 1979, a TPDF battalion under Major Gen (rtd) Msuya took Kampala and Amin fled the country.

The way Tanzanian forces planned and implemented the war,
transferring security and governing responsibilities to the Ugandans, and how quickly Ugandan took on greater responsibility for governing the country (hand over of sovereignty), so far such kind of speed have never been happened by any national, even the super powers. Let look i.e US invasion to Grenada, Panama, Iraq, and Afganistan, or Soviet union invasion to Afganistan, Russia invasion of Georgia.

Planning and implementation performed by Tanzanian forces (TPDF) will remain to be an interesting topic to be taught for so many years, in most of the war college in the world.(this is a comment from distinguished US military officers, during the debate about invasion and handing back the sovereignty, hosted by Dianee Rehm show which is produced by NPR member station WAMU 88. 5 and distributed nationally in USA by NPR)

History should have names, events and dates. War in Uganda by Tony Havagan Martha Honey is one of few writings which has scratched the surface of what transpired. Am responding to the comment that this war could be taught in military science. It is unfortunate that the war as has been a lot in our history have been distorted and never told to cover the weak and the wicked in this country.

Pole sana Mkuu. Nchi yetu haiwakumbuki kabisa mashujaa wetu ila inawakumbuka mafisadi wanaoangamiza nchi yetu.
