Kosa langu liko wapi?

    Jina langu ni Kichuguu mwana wa Porini, huwa natambuliwa rasmi kama Kichuguu Cha-Porini. Rafiki zangu wananiita majina tofauti, wale niliokuwa nao shule ya msingi sekondari na JKT huniiita Kichuguu, na wale niliokutana nao Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaam huniita Cha-Porini. Miaka 18 iliyopita nilihamia Marekani ambako nimekuwa nafanya biashara na kufundisha chuo kikuu fulani. Marafiki zangu wote huko huniita Kichuguu, ila wateja wangu wa kibiashara huniita Mr Cha-Porini, na hivyo wasaidizi wangu kwenye biashara wamezowea namna mbili za kuniita: tukiwa na wateja huniita Mr. Cha-Porini na tunapokuwa peke yetu basi huniita Kichuguu.

    Kule kwenye chuo ninakofundisha, wafanyakazi wa ngazi zote wananitambua kwa jina la Kichuguu, ila nikiletewa barua ya kiofisi basi huandikwa kwa Dr. Kichuguu Cha-Porini. Nikiitwa kwenye pati za kikazi basi barua zile huja nyumbani moja kwa moja na huandikwa kwa Kichuguu & Mkewangu ChaPorini, huwa hawaonyeshi titles za Prof, Dr. Mr and Mrs kabisa. Wanafunzi wangu wamekuwa hawatabiriki kabisa; huniita majina yoyote kati ya Dr. Cha-Porini, Professor Cha-Porini, Mr. Cha-Porini, Dr. Kichuguu, Professor Kichuguu na Mr. Kichuguu.

    Hivi majuzi nilitembelewa na rafiki zangu wawili tuliokuwa nao pale Chuo Ubungo, mmoja ni Associate Professor (nitampachika jina la Julius Nyerere kuficha identity yake) , mwingine ni Senior Lecturer ( yeye nitampachika jina la Jomo Kenyatta); waliongozana na Assistant Lecturer mmoja ambaye yuko kwenye mchakato wa kuhenyea Ph.D. yake kihalali (huyu nitamwita Milton Obote). Niliandaa hafla ndogo nyumbani kwangu ili kuwakaribisha mjini wageni wangu hawa hivyo nikaalika marafiki zangu kutoka chuoni ambao ni maprofesa kwenye nyanja sawa na za wageni wangu Julius na Jomo, kwani nilidhani kuwa hiyo itawafanya wachanginyakane kwa urahisi- hawatakosa la kuongelea.

    Kama mwenyeji nilifungua halfa ile kwa kujitambulisha mwenyewe na familia yangu; nikawaambia wenzangu kuwa mnanifahamu mimi naitwa Kichuguu, mke wangu anaitwa Mkewangu; nikafanya hivyo pia kwa watoto wangu watatu pamoja na mtoto wa dada niliyem-adopt ili kumpa nafasi ya kujipatia elimu. Baada ya hapo nikawatambulisha wageni wetu, nikaanza na yule Associate Professor kwa kusema huyu ni rafiki yangu wa siku nyingi sana tangu utotoni ingawa tulikuwa shule za msingi tofauti lakini tulikuwa tunakaa mtaa mmoja pale Tabora; anaitwa Julius, na huyu mwingine tulikutana tukiwa Chuo kikuu, yeye anaitwa Jomo; huyu wa mwisho nimemfahamu hapa kwa mara ya kwanza, wakati naondoka bongo alikuwa hajajiunga na kile Chuo; yeye anaitwa Milton. Baada ya hapo nikawaomba rafiki zangu waalikwa nao wajitambulishe, wakafanya hivyo kwa kutaja majina yao ya kwanza na tukaendelea na party.

    Mwishoni mwa party nikawaruhusu wageni wetu kutoka Dar nao kuzungumza waliyo nayo na kuwashukuru waliohudhuria pati ile. Hapo ndipo nilipojisikia Pwaa!!!!. Rafiki yangu Julius akatumia muda huo kufanya masahihisho kidogo kwenye utambulisho niliokuwa nimetoa mwanzo kwa kusema kuwa yeye jina lake halisi ni Professor Nyerere na huyo mwingine ni Dr Kenyatta, na huyu kijana yeye ni Mr. Obote. Basi tulipofunga pati, marafiki zangu waaalikwa waliwaaga marafiki zangu wageni kwa kutumia majina hayo hayo "kwaheri Professor Nyerere." "kwaheri Dr. Kenyatta" na "kwa heri Mr. Obote." Ilikuwa awkward moment kwangu kwa vile marafiki niliowaalika wote wana Ph.D. na ni maprofessor wa siku nyingi sana wakiwa wameshaandika papers zaidi ya 300 katika nyanja zao ambazo zinashabihiana kabisa na zile za Julius na Jomo, lakini niliwatambulisha wote kwa majina yao ya kwanza.

    Nilifanya kosa gani? Je kweli ni lazima nimwite rafiki yangu Professor Nyerere wakati nimekuwa namfahamau kama Julius kwa zaidi ya miaka 40?

    Mkuu ni kosa kubwa kwako hao,tabia hii hasa wanapenda wasomi na wanasiasa wa kiafrika lazima uanze na elimu yao.....Dr fulani au mheshimiwa fulani......mara kibao namsikia Sitta akikosoa na kusema mheshimiwa fulani ni mheshimiwa DR fulani.....
    Mimi nafikiri U dokta wako uwezo wako wa "kuishi kama dokta" na sio kujiita DR wakati "huishi kama dokta"

    Hukufanya kosa, lakini hukukumbuka jamii yetu ilivyo. Kuna nchi sio tu kwamba ukiwa mtu uliwahi kuishi ama kukua naye ndio usimwite Prof. ama Dr., bali hata ukiwa mwanafunzi unamwita kwa jina la kwanza. Lakini kwa Tanzania na Afrika kwa ujumla lazima uanze na hizo title.

    kwanza nikupe pongezi kwa ukarimu wote ambao ulionesha na jinsi gani umeharibiwa na umarekani! Mwanzoni hata mimi nilikuwa nikijua mtu ni Dr. (ukiondoa wale wa utabibu) basi nilimtambua hivyo hadi nilipogundua kuwa hawa wenye titles hizo ni wengi mno kiasi kwamba hata wao wenyewe hawaweki "Dr" mbele na huweka majina yao ya kwanza tu..

    Kwa kama US ukianza kumtaja kila mtu kwa academic achievement ya Udr au Uprofesa utajikuta na kazi kubwa sana hasa katika mazingira ambayo ni informal gathering.

    Binafsi ningekwazika kama kilichokuwa kinafanyika ni kusanyiko rasmi la wasomi pale chuoni kwenu ambapo academic titles na accomplishments zinatakiwa kutajwa unapomtambulisha mtu katika mazingira hayo kwa mfano: kama ulikuwa unambulisha Julius kuwa ni mtunzi wa paper x,y iliyofanya research juu ya b,c na ambaye huko nyumba unajua awards mbalimbali ambazo zimetambua basi ni haki kabisa kumtabulisha na vimulimuli vyote anavyostahili kwanza kwa sababu ni haki yake kitaaluma na pia kwa sababu kwenye kusanyiko kama hilo wasikilizaji wanapata idea ya huyo anayezungumza ni wa namna gani kitaaluma. Hata hivyo, kuna wengine kutokana na jina lao kuwa kubwa mno kitaaluma mara nyingi hata kutambulishwa kwa undani haistahili kwani inakuwa presumed kuwa watu wanafahamu tayari.

    Kwa mfano, mtu akimtambulisha Prof. Stephen Hawking labda iwe somewhere in TZ au mahali ambapo hajulikani basi unaweza ukataja mengi lakini kwenye maeneo ya sayansi na fizikia.. watamtambulisha tu kama Dr. Stephen Hawking.

    So, kosa la ndugu zetu hawa nadhani ni kutokuelewa au kuappreciate reality ya mazingira ya Marekani. Kosa la pili ni hilo nililosema hapo mwanzoni.. nadhani ulitakiwa (usiniulize kwa misingi gani) kuzungumza na marafiki zako na kujua wangependa uwatambulishe vipi.

    Hili la pili nimejifunza baada ya kupata nafasi ya kuwatambulisha watu mbalimbaali ambao wana sifa nyingi na ninawauliza ungependa nikutambulisheje.. mwingine anasema "Just. Dr. so and so" usiongeze chumvi.

    Otherwise, nadhani its just a matter of cultural differences more than makosa kwa upande wako au wao.

    Ooh,pole sana..Ni vyema ukaikubali hiyo hali,walimwengu ndivyo tulivyo..Mimi huwa napenda watu waitwe kwa majina yao hayo mataito yao haya dili wala nini na wala hayataongeza ua kupunguza chochote.

    Ninadhani kuwa hili tatizo la wasomi wetu kutanguliza titles zao za usomi hata mahala ambapo hapana uhusiano na usomi huo limekuwa linachangia sana kuongezeka kwa digrii za kununua ili mradi kila mtu anataka naye aonekana kuwa ana titles za kisomi. Nilipopitia cabinet ya Obama nilikuta watu kadhaa ambao hapa kwetu wangekuwa wanaitwa Dr. XYZ au Professor XYZ lakini nikaona wote wanaitwa Secretary XYZ; hebu jionee:
