Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama is among the four nominees short-listed for the English Premier League African Player of the Month award for September. In a statement by organisers New African Soccer, four names top the nominations list. Stoke City's Chelsea loanee, Nigeria's Victor Moses, put in some excellent performances in the course of September, impressing against QPR and setting up the winning goal by Peter Crouch against Newcastle recently.

His overall play and commitment had attracted very positive comments from his manager, Mark Hughes, and team-mates. Senegalese Diafra Sakho, who plays as striker for West Ham, has brought something different into the team. Having made a debut late in August, Sakho settled down and has struck a decent partnership with fellow striker Valencia at Upton Park. Sakho has scored in each of his team's three league games in September, including an audacious chip over Liverpool goalie Mignolet in a 3-1 win.

Becoming the first Kenyan to play in the Premier League seems to spur Victor Wanyama on, and he has been pivotal to the enviable second position that Southampton occupies in the Premier League. Wanyama has been rock-solid in the Saints' midfield and topped a good performance in the month by becoming the first ever Kenyan to score a goal in the Premier League, the only goal in a win away at Swansea.

I wish him well. We need to have many more East Africans out there in order to uplift soccer standards in this region.

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has been named the English Premier League African Player of the Month for September, reports africanfootball.com. In a statement released by the organisers of the award, New African Soccer and signed by the Awards Director Tunde Adelakun, Wanyama saw off a very strong challenge by Senegalese Diafra Sakho, who plays as striker for West Ham.

The other nominees were Victor Moses, Diafra Sakho and Mo Diame. The Kenyan, who joined the Saints last season from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, has enjoyed a superb start to the season with his team. Southampton are occupying an enviable second place in the Premier League at the moment and Wanyama has been central to a great midfield display that has seen them as dangerous going forward as much as they have been solid at the back.

New African Soccer statement said that Wanyama, who also scored his first goal of the season hence becoming the first player from Kenya to play and now to score in the hugely competitive English Premier League will be given his award upon his return from international duty. "It was a tough choice as we had to also take into account, the performance of the Senegalese Diafra Sakho, who has been in explosive form since he arrived in England.

Sakho has scored in virtually every game he played for West Ham and is as deserving of the award as Wanyama", the statement added, "but what swayed it in Wanyama's favour was his overall team work and contribution, especially at what many thought would be a difficult time for his club, having lost many first team players in the summer".
