There were mass demonstrations in Nairobi yesterday over Kenya's escalating Millitary spending while ignoring the funding of the Ministry Of Health.

Civil society groups Matched to Ministry of Health HeadQuarters then headed to Kenyas Treasury to demand an explanation why the government was spending so much on the Kenyan Millitary as if the country is at war.

The protesters were latter addressed by Ministry of Finance Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth who pledged to take the issue to higher authority

Kenya has been at an Arms race with Ethiopia in the past 5 Years over fears that Ethiopia may end up dominating the region which Kenya considers itself as being the super power Economically and Millitarily.

According to Global Security Magazine Millitary Spending,In the year 2005 Kenya was
the biggest spender in Millitary Equipment in EAC.Spending Estimates:-

    Ethiopia--$296 Million
    Kenya--$281 Million
    Uganda--$193 Million
    Tanzania--$21 Million

    World Wide Military Expenditures

However, things have now changed and Kenya is estimated to have spent over $900 Million last year.Middle East Countries like Jordan,Israel,Russia and USA have all pitched tent in Kenya to secure contracts on Fighter Jets Supply,Humvees and Navy Fridgets Supply etc.

Kenya currently boasts of the Third Best Air force in Africa after Angola and South Africa
while its Ground Force has got the best equipment in the region. Its even said that Kenya
is selling off its aged tanks to DRC and Cameroon while its Navy is being stocked by the Spanish Navy.Kenyan Special forces get their Training in Israel and there is even talk that Israel is secretly selling their Mercava Tanks to Kenya. These are the Tanks that Israel Special Forces use when they cross to Palestinian Territories and which they usually use against Labanon's Hezbolla. Most of the Tanks in Kenyan Barracks are the Russian and Ukrainian Made T33.

Are these not priorities that were got wrong?

Wars aren't won by equipment only..ni sababu, nia na uwezo. Dominating who in the region? Try to cross the border to Tanzania, just for fun and see what happens! Or try to annex Arusha region the Amin way! That money would have solved that problem, the Kenyan own invention, flying toilets! What about chang'aa stuff victims, buy them tusker with that money! and you have an enemy within, tribalism! why don't you fight that first!

Good move by NGOs! tell them to stop spending your money to buy used military junks and yet they can't even fight Al-Shabaab!

So are they going to use these Mercava Tanks to cross into Kibera, Mathare, and Kisumu during the 2012 elections? bad priority for a poor 3rd world country like Kenya!

Very wrong Kayundi2!! how many Pokots, Kalenjin, and Gikuyu people die because of hunger, Malaria, TB etc?.

Kayundi2, Ethiopia is not your enemy but poverty is...by the way @least Ethiopia have got balls to go into Somalia! Kenyan army can't even march into Migingo!!!.

Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania all have donated their armies to Darfur, Somalia, DRC, Lebanon or even Comoro. Kayundi2, where is the Kenyan's army??

Corrupt and greedy politicians are behind all these deals, there is nothing to be proud of.

smatta, is military spending a top priority for politicians in kenya than the well being as your fellow kenyans are demanding?

the fact is tz spends more than that, and is seen that way because tz dont release information related to national security as is and will always be classified top secret.

Well, Tanzania is lucky to be surrounded by friendly countries (Kenya, Uganda) or countries that are too poor to wage a war (Mozambique, DR Congo), or countries that are battle weary (Rwanda, Burundi).

Kenya has Somalia as its neighbour, a lawless state with extremists running around. Ethiopia has historically been a friendly country, except in pre-colonial periods when Ethiopian tribes (Sidam, Afaan) periodically crossed Abyssinian borders to blood their spears. But its not a country to be trusted. It has 78 million mostly poor people hungry for resources. So, you can imagine the temptation they would have if Kenya discovered oil in Northern Kenya. It makes sense to arm yourself, if only for deterrence purposes.

By the way, Southern Sudan is another wild card. Most people there have known nothing but war all their lives. Uganda sometimes behaves as if Kenya is their enemy. So, probably the only country Kenya regards completely harmless is Tz. There's a rumour though that half of Tanzanian Army is armed with sticks, not guns, Luhehez.

BTW, I think Tanzanians should be outraged that their government spends so little for defense purposes. Investors tend to develop cold feet on the prospects of investing in places where security is not guaranteed. What if the Somali pirates one day looted Dar's shops? They are becoming more mobile these days. Plus, TZ is one of the countries in the Nile Basin Initiative. The talks have been slowed down these days with both Sudan and Egypt threatening war on anyone who jeopardizes Nile waters. The country (Tanzania) has been threatened by Egypt on its quest to use lake Victoria waters (including those of its tributaries). How can it offer a viable deterrent if it's spending so little in defense?

From strategic point of view, increased defense spending in Kenya makes a lot of sense. Those protesters are just ill informed. Maybe they should reduce the number of children they have so they can pay hospital bills without the governments help.

At least Tanzania has shown sense in not wasting her meagre resources in arming up and enrinching the rich producers of weapons. This is a status we need to maintain.
