    Women declare sex boycott

    Updated 5 hr(s) 55 min(s) ago

    By Susan Anyangu

Sex, money and power are said to make the world go round, especially when dealing with politicians who take people round in circles until they feel dizzy.
Now, women in Kenya have joined hands to boycott sex for the next seven days to push for reforms and constitutional review.

Beginning today, G10 - a consortium of women lobbies - announced a week-long sex boycott to push for political reforms, and have secured support from a prominent personality in the land.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga's wife, Ida, said she would support the campaign "100 per cent".
"The women's voices must be heard," Mrs Odinga said, adding: "The boycott is not a punishment, but rather an action to draw attention to the issue."

During a Press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, G10 said they had spoken to Ida and First Lady Lucy Kibaki and urged them to support their cause.
G10 coalition partner Rukia Subow of Maendeleo ya Wanawake said violence was escalating, people were dying of hunger and that majority of those affected are women. They must do something.
"This boycott shows how women have come to the conclusion that there is no solution being sought to end the political impasse. And while the two principals (Kibaki and Raila) haggle, the country has been thrown into confusion," said Ms Subow.

But Kenya's menfolk need not bother try doing anything. Those accustomed to securing "take-away", the euphemism for twilight girls, be warned: They will not be in business, as the girls will be paid by G10 for "staying away from work".

G10 officials did not explain how they would monitor the success of their campaign, or how to ensure those paid to keep off the streets actually do that. They will rely on goodwill and integrity of their supporters.

    Extraordinary situations

Ms Patricia Nyaudi, the executive director of the Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida), a part of G10, said: "These are serious issues and should not be trivialised. The idea is to deny ourselves what we consider essential for the good of our country."

Ms Carole Ageng'o, the executive director of Tomorrow's Child Initiative, another G10 member, said: "Indeed, extraordinary situations call for extraordinary measures and the G10 calls upon women of Kenya to go on a sex boycott to protest at the poor leadership and to demand that the two principals take control and lead the country to its desired destiny."

In their statement, the G10 members said while the two principals engage in power games, the country risked plunging into anarchy as hostilities between their supporters were renewed by the bickering over positions.
Ms Anne Njogu, the executive director of Centre for Rights Education and Awareness, said House Speaker Kenneth Marende had failed to make a strong decision and opted for a "safe" exit over the wrangles.
"The Speaker, yet again, missed the opportunity to show political leadership and instead chose to run away from his mandate by making a safe decision at a time the country needs tough decisive action," Njogu said of Mr Marende's decision on Tuesday to step in as temporary chair of the Leader of Government Business.

The G10 coalition said Marende's ruling only served to provide temporary reprieve and soon the two principals will resort to more power games.
The women called on Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka to refuse to be used as a point of conflict between the two principals.
"The National Accord is a marriage between two partners and the introduction of a third party is mischievous, suspicious and meant to rock the partnership," said Njogu.

The G10 coalition demands that the two principals show responsible leadership and commitment to the National Accord and reconciliation. To that regard, they will in the next seven days draft performance contracts for the two principals and present them for signature.

    War-mongering husbands

"Should either of the two leaders fail to sign, it will be confirmation of the lack of commitment, bad faith and contempt for the people of Kenya," they said.
Sex boycott is not an entirely new concept, having been used by European and North American women opposed to war in Iraq in 2003.
Thousands of actresses all over the world took part in a reading of the ancient Greek play, Lysistrata, as part of a protest against the war as they refrained from sex.
The play, written by Aristophanes in 415 BC, features Greek women who, fed up with their warmongering husbands, go on a sex strike in a bid to end the endless conflicts.
Eventually, the menfolk succumb and agree to a truce.
Last December, hundreds of Italian women pledged to go without sex unless their men promised to refrain from setting off dangerous illegal fireworks.

But if female sexuality has been used to make political statements, it has also been exploited to wrench power from women, as happened in the Gikuyu traditional society at the turn of the 20th Century.

Then, the menfolk impregnated their wives while their leader, Wangu wa Makeeri, was tricked into displaying her nakedness as she danced under the moon. This marked her downfall.

10 days only???!!!! These ladies are not serious. This wont work.

They should hold out until a political settlement is reached. These old blokes can go for months without feeling the urge. Less viagra expenses for them.

Kenyan women hit men with sex ban

[IMG] The wives of the Kenyan president and PM have been asked to join in

Women's activist groups in Kenya have slapped their partners with a week-long sex ban in protest over the infighting plaguing the national unity government.
The Women's Development Organisation coalition said they would also pay prostitutes to join their strike.
The campaigners are asking the wives of the Kenyan president and the prime minister to join in the embargo.
They say they want to avoid a repeat of the violence which convulsed the country after the late-2007 elections.
Relations between Kenya's coalition partners, led by President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, have become increasingly acrimonious.
Now the dispute has moved to the nation's bedrooms.
    Lead from the front
Patricia Nyaundi, executive director of the Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida), one of the organisations in the campaign, said they hoped the seven-day sex ban would force the squabbling rivals to make up.

She said the campaign would start from her bedroom and that emissaries had been sent to the two leaders' wives, Ida Odinga and Lucy Kibaki, urging them to join in and lead from the front.
"Even commercial sex workers should join in the campaign which is so vital to the country," Mrs Nyaundi told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.
"Great decisions are made during pillow talk, so we are asking the two ladies at that intimate moment to ask their husbands: 'Darling can you do something for Kenya?'"
But the BBC's Anne Waithera in Nairobi says the campaign is likely to meet resistance from some men.
Our correspondent says some would argue that Kenyan men cannot even abstain for two days.
The campaign is being backed by several other lobby groups, including the Caucus for Women's Leadership and Maendeleo ya Wanawake - a nationwide network of women's groups in rural Kenya.
Mr Kibaki and Mr Odinga agreed to share power last year to end post-election violence, which had left some 1,500 people dead and forced 300,000 from their homes.
But the deal has soured with the premier's party claiming he has been sidelined and protesting over everything from electoral reform to the lack of a toilet for Mr Odinga during one recent official visit.

    Maswali:

Mke hana hatia juu ya mwili wake ile mume and vise versa. Wanawake wakitanzanzia washaurini wanawake wenzenu wanaharibu Kenya huko.

The sex boycott ends at 6pm sharp today. We wish to congratulate the women and their men for supporting the G10.

    We have 5 national issues:-

    1. The National Accord and Reconciliation Act, 2008 should be renegotiated.

This was a ceasefire document. The architecture of this Act is weak and can only lead us from one crisis to another. The G10 therefore demands a renegotiation of NARA at zero option.

    2. NO UNGA, NO CONSTITUTION

Before the Constitution of Kenya can be rewritten, we must build national consensus; and then constitutionalize that consensus. To build a constitution around a divided nation is fallacious

Similarly, there are three challenges facing the people of Kenya: Unga, Unga and Unga. The G10 puts the government on notice regarding unga. And the constitution is about Unga! We call on the exploited women and their disillusioned men to unite under a common call of “No Unga , No Constitution”. There is no point giving a brilliant constitution to hungry, angry people.

    3. THE IDEA OF SNAP ELECTIONS IS POLITICAL NONSENSE.

The G10 disagrees with the church and all the other persons calling for an election at this point in time. This talk is reckless to the extreme. The women of Kenya and their men refuse to participate in a snap election. At zero option, the principals should fix their problems. And if they cannot, G10 is happy mediate.

    4. The G10, the Presidency and the Prime Minister should form a coalition to address the security situation in this country.

We invite the President as Commander in Chief, the Prime minister as the supervisor-in-chief and the women as the mothers of this nation. The G10 acknowledges that we have failed as mothers and that is why our sons have gone into crime. G10 invites the presidency and the prime minister to partner with the mothers across this nation to restore the security to this country. G10 will be the rearguard!

    5. G10 rejects the Politics of Divisionism

Regarding the post election crisis, the president is guilty of the sin of omission; the prime minister is guilty of the sin of commission. The two owe the country an apology for this. They should not delegate the healing and reconciliation process to a government department. They need to lead this. This is the least they can do.

    ACTION

    1. The G10 is in the process of securing appointments to meet with, and deliver the performance contracts and accountability audits to the two principals on Friday the 8th of May 2009. We have every confidence that they will meet with us and sign the contracts. If, however, for any reason, we are unable to deliver the performance contracts to the President and the Prime Minister in person, the G10 women in Othaya constituency and G10 women in Langata will deliver them to the principals at home

Signed by the G10 at Nairobi this 6th of May 2009
