Kenya to Build Biggest Wind Farm in Africa
Kenya is positioning itself as a leader in clean energy in Africa. The east African nation is looking to solar, wind and geothermal technologies to meet its energy needs.
Trading at the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) in Nairobi that depends on reliable energy future. NSE plays a key role in the Kenyan economy by raising capital for businesses and mobilizing savings for investment.
Kenya is currently installing 365 giant wind turbines in the North Eastern region near Lake Turkana.
Set to be completed in 2012, and backed by African Development Bank (ADB), this would be the biggest wind farm on the continent, supplying a quarter of Kenya's current installed capacity and one of the highest proportions of wind energy to be fed in a national grid anywhere in the world.
Kenya has recently refocused itself towards energy sufficiency with several initiatives, including:
The country has also set itself a goal of generating 1,200MW from geothermal by 2015.
- Announcement by Prime Minister Raila Odinga of raft of measures aimed at forestalling energy crisis and shifting to investment in renewable energy, including plans for free distribution of one million energy-saving light bulbs in exchange for ordinary bulbs;
- Securing of US$405 million loan to finance development of Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, the biggest wind farm project in the continent, from AfDB.
- Commissioning of the third phase of Olkaria geothermal plant by Ormat Technologies Inc. The plant will add to the electricity grid 48 megawatts of electricity, and mitigate CO2 emissions and reduce the average production cost of electricity while reducing the east Africas biggest economy dependence on imports.
- Separately Kenya and private investors are also seeking support funding from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol for a further 35MW extension of the Olkaria geothermal plant.
Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director, commenting on UNEP commissioned study on the potential of geothermal energy, has been quoted saying, "There are least 4,000MW of electricity ready for harvesting along the east Africas Rift Valley.
Echoing similar sentiments, Monique Barbut, Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the GEF, has said, The work in the Rift Valley is demonstrating that geothermal is not only technologically viable but cost effective for countries in Africa where there an overall potential of at least 7,000MW".
However, Herman Oelsner, president of the African Wind Energy Association, told Guardian in an interview, "Ultimately for Africa solar is the answer, although [costs mean] we may still be decades away."
