From what i know and i have heard, the kenyan govt is pretty serious on this port. they are betting on this port to become the transit hub of subsaharan africa. for example a ship from asia eg india or china heading to central africa has to go down on indian ocean all the way to cape town then up on atlantic ocean till it gets to cameroon but with the lamu port you can cut that distance by more that a half and greatly cut the the cost of transportation. this port will be closer to southern sudan than port sudan is, ethiopia(a country of 80million) dangerously depends on the djibouti port hence they have publicly urged kenya to built this port as it will give them another alternative. although some of the necessary the necessary transportation infrustructure is not there yet but it is this HUGE very realistic potential that the kenyan govt wants to tap into.

a japanese company is almost done doing the feasibility study of the port and then come up with designs for it after which a chinese company will take over the construction work. one thing for sure though it that it will be a very deep port capable of anchoring the biggest of ships. it will also be the biggest port in subsaharan africa after the durban port. the lamu port and the current mombasa port will make kenya a very attractive and vital transit point in sub saharan africa
