State to publicize proposed constitutional review

THE government plans to deploy teams of educators to raise people's awareness on the envisaged constitution reforms, Minister for Constitutional Affairs and Justice Celina Kombani has announced.

Speaking at the 2011 Tanganyika Law Society's Annual General Meeting here over the weekend, Ms Kombani, who represented Prime Minister Mr Mizengo Pinda, noted that the majority of Tanzanians have never even seen the current constitution document.

''We want to prepare our people so that they all become aware of what a constitution entails and this will be done through mass civic education as well as ensuring that they are provided with copies of the National Constitution,'' stated the Minister.

Minister Kombani said the government plans to involve members of the legal fraternity, such as the TLS, civil and community organizations as well as local elders to execute the task.

''But as you are all aware very few Tanzanians own or even have seen the constitution that is apart from those working in sectors that require regular references to the document,'' she said.

She added that once people become aware of the constitution, it would be easy for them to actively contribute to the process of compiling a new one.

Out going TLS President Mr Felix Kibodya had earlier on said that it was wrong for people to think that Tanzania can compile its new constitution based on other countries' experiences.

The TLS is also embarking on its own mission to print and distribute copies of the Tanzania constitution countrywide for people to see and go through the document prior to the proposed amendments.ituation here is very different from countries like Kenya, because Tanzania hasn't had much social or political problems thus the way we need to conduct the process will be quite different from Kenya, Uganda or Zimbabwe,'' he stated.
