President Jakaya Kikwete is today expected to see off a group of delegates from 75 countries (50 of them from Africa) trekking Africas highest peak Mount Kilimanjaro in a bid to fight against violence against women and girls.
Deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Community Development Gender and Children Marcel Katemba said at the weekend that President Kikwete would be seeing off a special expedition dubbed Speak out, Climb up! from Marangu Hotel in Moshi.
The Ministry of Community Development Gender and Children is coordinating the Africa Unite! event in collaboration with the United Nations (UN-Women) organisations.
The permanent secretary said the Unite to end violence against women and girls expedition, kicking off today, was expected to reach the Kilimanjaro summit on Thursday at the peak of the International Womens Day to be marked worldwide.
There is a pledge of money to every level of climbing the mountain and US$50,000 will be given to those reaching Africas highest peak (5,892 metres above sea level).
The money will go to the fight against gender-based violence initiatives in the winners country of origin. At the peak, each representative will issue a statement regarding steps taken or to be taken in their respective countries to put a stop on cases of violence against women and girls currently in the increase in Africa.
