THE Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), a pan-African University undergoing construction here is expected to start registering its pioneer students from early 2011.

Vice -Chancellor, Prof Burton Mwamila, explained here that the maiden academic year for the prestigious pan-African institution will, however, start operating sometimes after June 2011 when the ongoing construction of its first campus is completed.

“The main contractor for the inaugural campus started work last August and the project is to take 10 months to be completed, which means the University premises should be ready by mid-next year,” said Prof Mwamila, adding that the NM-AIST will open classes with a batch of 100 students and proceed to increase the number as time goes by.

“The next intake will see the University enroll 500 students and later on the number is to double,” said the Vice-Chancelor who revealed that the University, which at the moment is fully owned by the Tanzanian Government, is to run two campuses one being the inaugural institution located in Tengeru and the another expected to be built at Karangai area, some 12 kilometres from the initial campus.

The first campus is being constructed by Tanzanian Government at the cost of about 40bn/- on a 200 acre land formerly owned by the Centre for Agricultural Mechanization and Rural Technology (CARMATEC) which shifted its operations to Njiro area.

Already, a greater part of the Nelson Mandela University's first campus base has been accomplished; it is a state-of-the-art scientific oriented institution which is about to transform the Tengeru area of Meru District from a farm village into a modern academic city.

“The proposed Karangai campus whose construction will soon start is going to be the main establishment and the government has provided 3285 acres for it,” said Prof Mwamila adding that the institute will be the biggest tertiary learning centre in Eastern and Central Africa projected to accommodate close to 20,000 students as well as housing various independent research institutions, hi-tech factories, laboratories, technology park and ICT resource centres.

The institute of Science and Technology based in Arusha is part of the network of Pan-African institutions located across the continent. These institutions are brainchild of the Nelson Mandela Institution which envisions to train and develop the next generation of African Scientists and Engineers and impact profoundly on the continent’s development through science and technology application.

NM AIST-Arusha, a Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) accredited institution of higher learning, is being developed into a world class research intensive institution whose final objectives are engraved in the well versed vision and mission with the ultimate goal to contribute significantly to the economic development of Africa through the much needed inputs of Science and Technology.

It is an institution with a transparent governance system. NM AIST-Arusha will mainly focus on postgraduate and post-doc training and research in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) related fields, with sufficient doses of relevant social sciences ingredients.

Life sciences (Bio-Sciences and Bio-Engineering) will be developed to become one of the niche-areas of NM AIST-Arusha, taking advantage of the immense bio-diversity in countries forming its catchment area. The institution will seek to stimulate and catalyze intensification of agricultural production, and value addition to the various natural products (agricultural, mineral, etc) produced in the region.

Other main thematic areas to be covered by the institution will include Material Science and Engineering Energy, ICT, Mining, Environment and Water. Emphasis shall be on linkage to society and the local industry, and scientific and technological response to local needs.
