Japan’s embattled Prime Minister Naoto Kan said on Tuesday he will give up his salary until the nuclear crisis in the country is over.
Captain Kan’s surprising announcement comes just days after he requested last week that all reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant be shut down.

He also said he will review the country’s energy policy and that Japan will begin to explore alternative energy sources like wind and solar power.
Kan said he will give up his prime minister salary — which is a mere 1,636,000 Yen a month ($20,250 or 14,000 EUR) — and would continue to receive only the salary he is entitled to as a member of the Japanese parliament.
